Free Giveaway: Win A New Apple TV

Earlier today I reviewed the Apple TV player in a head-to-head comparison with the Roku 2 XS in an article entitled “Roku 2 vs. Apple TV: How To Chose The Right $99 Streamer. To go with the review, I am giving away one Apple TV to a lucky reader of my blog. To enter the drawing, all you have to do is leave one comment on this post and make sure you submit the comment with a valid email address. The drawing is open to anyone with a mailing address in the U.S. and the winner will be selected at random later this month. The drawing is now over. Congrats to Addison L. who won the item.

I’m also giving away a Roku 2 XS unit and a Vizio Co-Star unit. You must enter each drawing separately. Good luck!

  • Over the top and cord cutting will happen quickly – when it happens – just like the iPhone moved the population over to smartphones, a device like AppleTV could give cableTV subscribers the slight nudge to move them off of cable and onto overthetop.

  • Randy Dominguez

There is one reason I would want the Apple TV over all other boxes…Mirroring…it allows you to display your iPad or iPhone 4S screen on a big screen TV. I would love to use this in a classroom setting. Thanks for giving away an Apple TV box.

  • Dan Haggerty

    Fantastic review!!!

  • Dave J

Awesome! Really love the capabilities of the Apple TV

  • James O’Shea

    Decisions decisions…

  • gbohrn

    Apple TV Sounds good

  • Dadr

I have commented on a similar review before. I like the Apple TV better for folks that are living the iLife, and especially for the first gen version. I would dearly love the ability to add flash “drive” to the new apple TV in order to load it with pictures and music. One of my favorite things to do is to leave the TV on showing pictures from vacations, etc. and playing my favorite tunes. Much better than the news, and doesn’t require the computer left on all the time.

  • Wileypo46

Still not convinced which to buy.

  • hellojody

Thanks for writing the article. At $99 each I think you can have both, especially if you win them. πŸ˜‰

  • jay eichler

    Need A second apple tv

  • Bryan Hilton

Great article! I like Apple TV because I can sync it with my iTunes account on my iMac and listen to all of the content on my computer through my TV. I wish it had amazon though.

  • Tim

thanks for the comparison. Helps me understand the differences between the two devices.

  • Nel

i already have a roku and would like to get a free apple tv!

  • Kim Chen

it would be nice to win something online once πŸ™‚

  • barry

Is Apple committed to this project?

  • SHAUN BRASWELL

Thanks for comparing the two. It’s nice seeing the side by side.

  • Andrew Pease

I think AppleTV is a very interesting product, but a lack of real local storage has always puzzled me. Proper HD playback, however, was a must and it is good to see the newer platform supporting that.

  • Longwalker

I think for the Apple TV to be a product embraced by the consumer, it needs a DVR function so subscribed channels are waiting for consumption.

  • Chris O

Great review. I was nearly sold on AppleTV, but I have my doubts now. I don’t see it really being all that beneficial. Right now my DVD player has basically the same streaming capabilities as the AppleTV plus I have my iMac connected to my TV for the rare times I need to watch something from iTunes. Yes, it’s kind of clumsy, but it works great! I think I’m going to wait a little longer.

  • Wunderkind

A great review, very helpful in my decision making process.

  • Mark Laughlin

We use Western Digital TV Live Hub and Roku 2 for a SkitterTV based streaming product. So far prefer WD over Roku. Haven’t tried Apple TV. Would Like to.

  • Ravi Mishra

I am using Roku2 XS and loving it. but wants to compare it with Apple TV. Looking forward for wining this.

  • Jim Richardson

I already own other Apple devices and want to use Apple’s ecosystem

  • Sanjay

Thanks for the article. I have been looking for a good solution that can let me stream Netflix, Amazon and iTunes. Ideally I would like to get some Discovery channel shows also. What is the best way to get some Discovery channel shows? Thanks.

  • Robert Madore

    I love the review.
Please review more of the less popular streaming boxes, perhaps there is a jewel yet to be discovered.
Thanks for the chance to win an Apple TV!

  • ibesurfn

Great informative review… now which unit to win and try πŸ™‚

  • Malik

Article made my decision so much easy. I had been confused for last so many days between Apple TV and Roku.

  • Thanks for the informative review and the giveaway opportunity!

  • Prashant

I am waiting for years for the TV business model to get disrupted…Wanna check where has AppleTV reached in the process of disrupting this tightly firmed traditional TV / cable industry

  • Mike

Very informative article. Many people are torn with which one to go with… why not just get both. Win win πŸ™‚

  • Jeremy

I think I’m in favor of the Roku, but I’d give Apple a try.

  • greatseapenguin

I like both units but for developers and potential broadcasters who want to stream content or create their own channel, Apple does not even have an SDK (software development kit.) Roku on the other hand has a free SDK and a huge developers community, which probably explains why there are so many free channels (approx 300) on their platform. And many online video reviews at YouTube of both products ultimately pick the Roku over the Apple device.

  • I work in IT for a community college where the plan is to use the Apple TV. Because of wireless network security issues I don’t see it being used as much as instructors anticipate.

  • NP

    Great Review!

  • JenisysJohn

Thanks for the info. My son is a diehard Applehead, so it’s good to get a clearer picture of the devices in this area, including AppleTV.

  • I need Apple TV for my 1st new place!

  • I would love to win this for my daughter. She is off to college on a scholarship and I wish I had the money to get her everything she could ever want. Thanks for the chance to win.

Great review, I don’t have any experience with either of the products but would love to win the apple tv.

    Nice review

  • Mark

Great article. I have a first gen roku and am looking to upgrade soon.

  • CN

    Great comparison. Thanks!

  • Monica Young

You are amazing! Thanks for the entry into the giveaway

  • MK

The possibility of winning a set-top box sure did increase the number of responses to the article :). If anyone decides to go with the Roku for its ability to play media via its USB port, I must recommend using flash media (over a portable, spinning hard drive) for playback, as it is much faster and more responsive.

  • allen

I’ve been working with a Roku box for about a year. Would not mind trying the Apple. Thanks!

  • Nice review, I have installed both Roku and AppleTV for my parents and they are happy with them. The interface issue with Roku is not a deal breaker but does make the Apple unit more frequently visited. As for set up, I performed this and Roku needs to simply that step for many users in the future.

  • Jessicareilene

Great review πŸ™‚ I personally love anything apple and can’t wait to try AppleTV

  • Jason Swick

I’ve been using a Roku for about a year now. It would be sooo much better if it had a web browser. Of course, then I would need a keyboard too.

  • jimmy markus

Thanks for the review this is helping me make my decision

  • Petty4317

    Great reviews, keep em coming!

  • egujju

I enjoyed the erview but still confused as to which device to buy. Your review did clarify some important differences. Thanks.

  • Dani

Fwiw, I have both an apple tv and a roku and much prefer the apple tv experience.

  • Sharon

  • Bob

I love them both and own both.

  • perfect for my Apple centric household…

  • Mr. Phil

This would be my first Apple product, I would like to see what they are all about.

  • It looks like a lot of these streaming players are providing the same features. I’ll probably go with Vizio. Like the remote and it’s compatible with my TV

  • SmithTwin

not trying to kiss a$$ but the 2012 Streaming Media Device Guide has been EXTREMELY helpful in figuring out “what features I want” vs “what features I need”, then cross referencing which device meets those “needs”. i also like to win.

  • Patricia Stern

Lucky for me I came across ur blog Very informative. What do u own?

  • SC

I tend to shun the elitist apple attitude, but on the other hand, there are many things in this world that I would accept for free with an apple tv unit being high on the list.

  • John

    Would love one

  • Bjones

Good reviews. Looking to put devices into business conference rooms to provide additional content. Would love to have an AppleTV for actual testing before making a decision!.

  • syed

    how does the co-star compare

  • Nicholas Sousa

This comparison is very valuable, especially the format in which the user’s desires (e.g. “Want to use your computer as a source?”) are answered for each gizmo. That was a terrible sentence.

  • Ax

I still don’t think there is one Box that serves all needs πŸ™

  • Pearl

I’m trying to decide from all the streaming devices and your blog is a big help. Thanks!

I enjoyed reading your review, gave me lots of good info. Thanks

  • Currently considering converting BACK to an Apple household … this was useful. Thanks!

  • Anthony Petroff

I am shopping to use for sports streaming.

I just learned that Apple and Roku might have different amounts of “buffer” memory which may affect stream flow and problems with “resets”; so what is the difference between Roku/Apple and a media player like Western Digital.

  • NYCMRX

I’ve just read five reviews comparing Roku and ATV, and this was by far the most thorough and insightful. While I am still on the fence, your comparison has been a great help, and I will be back when in need of further advice – Thanks!

  • RobbieSDA

  • Mark McKay

I’d be more than happy to accept an Apple TV.

  • Michelle S.

I’m a big Apple fan, but my husband isn’t. I’m not even sure if the Apple TV streams Amazon Instant videos, which we use when Netflix and Hulu Plus don’t have what we want. We don’t have cable or satellite, and have been using my Wii, but it is very buggy. I really think I’m wanting the Apple TV, though.
