Online Video Is Not Web 2.0 Or In A "Bubble"

I am getting really tired of people writing about the online video industry in the media and referencing the technology as Web 2.0 or worse yet, describing our industry as being in a "bubble". Online video is not in a bubble and the technology has been around 13 years. I don't think you can call any technology part of Web 2.0 when it's been around as long as streaming media has and personally, I think the whole Web 2.0 term is nonsense anyway.

Many of these writers who are writing about online video have got it all wrong. User generated content is in a bit of a bubble right now, not video. Just because video is part of the whole UGC space, which includes blogs, podcasts, vblogging etc... does not make the technology of video as something that should not be taken seriously.

Many of you, especially the vendors, who have spent a lot of time, effort and money to brand and market your products and services have done so to present a real product or service. You've done all this work so that your offering will be seen as anything but something in a "bubble". I think it's bad for the entire industry when vendors products and services are treated as if they just part of some online video bubble. So the next time you are at a conference, read an article or hear someone reference the online video industry and your products and services as being part of a "bubble", set them straight.

Greetings

I couldn't agree with your insights more. If anything the streaming industry is providing the basic infrastructure for the internet that is yet to be. I recently finished a project at the American Cardiology Conference in New Orleans for ClinicalTrialResults.org. The founder of the site Dr. Gibson spoke convincingly about about how the sites growth has progressed and how on a very steady basis the sites video offereings have grown in demand to exceed the requests for other types of media.

The real problem with journalists is that they need crisis (gloom and doom) to get anyones attention. They are also myopic because their area of expertise is sooooo very narrow. Consumer usage of streaming media is currently limited by the available content and the desires of hardware manufacturers to have everyone watching movies on postage stamp sized screen. As you know education, training, and numerous other business needs are beginning to find the advantages of streaming media to be the targeted cost effective and metrix efficient medium that we all know it to be.

Most journalist not only lack knowledge and insight they need disasters for their own survival and what better way to find one than to announce it is around the corner.

Dan Rayburn points out in his Business of Online Video blog that streaming video isn't a Web 2.0 technology. But while Dan's point is that streaming video has been around way too long to be considered part of the Web 2.0 "fad", I think the relationship between video and Web 2.0 is more complicated than that.

The key ingredient of "Web 2.0" technologies that makes them worthy of that label is that they have open APIs and are freeform platforms that allow user behavior to define and create value.

what u said above is quite convincing.i agree.however, there is no doubt that business vedio will be overwhelming in this whold, for it's direct and impressive effect. Many free websites, such as www.cycbiz.com ,which is America-based featured by business vedio,is take every effort to serve for their customer. therefore we should catch these opportunity to make our own known to the world.

YES i agree 2 there is many free websites. what is security term and conitions ?? any one tell me about it ???

I agree with you a 100% that the term Web 2.0 is overstated and that it encompasses everything new in terms of web technology.
