Free Product Giveaway: Roku HD-XR Digital Video Player
Dan Rayburn | Thursday December 3, 2009 | 01:11 PM The drawing is now closed. Last month Roku announced the launch of their new Channel Store and while I got hands on with the offering, I didn't have time to write up a review since I was at the Streaming Media West show. Winner: Josh B. from New York, NY.
In celebration of the launch, the nice folks over at Roku are letting me give away one Roku HD-XR unit to a reader of my blog. All you have to do is leave one comment on this post on why you want the Roku unit. Make sure you use your real name and a valid e-mail address and I'll pick one lucky user at random at the end of the month. on December 14th. A big thanks to Roku for the gear and for making a really kick-ass player, one of my favorite devices on the market today.

I have read a lot about the Roku Player and would really like to have an HD unit of my own. I am really interested in this model specifically due to the Wifi capabilities.

Wi-Fi enabled streaming is where it is at.
I currently use a laptop connected to my LCD TV to access internet based content, but it is an expensive solution and can be hard to navigate at higher resolutions from more than a few feet.
I really want to see what a purpose built box can do - and get my laptop back :)

I have been trying to figure out a way to integrate my media with netflix and have come to the sad conclusion that my apple tv will not do it. I have been researching different units and have found the Roku the best way to get the desired results.

We are putting together a media site and are in beta right now while acquiring and uploading content. We hope to quickly move to have TV distribution and the Roku box is near the top of the list of platforms we will be considering. We will need to arrange test platforms directly from all the vendors, but would be great to get our hands on the HD box to start evaluating it.

Dan: Would love to own the Roku player, and add it to a long list of great video gadgets and sources from over the years - a betamax, microwave pay tv, early video store member, Tivo Series 1, Netflix on my laptop, and the iPhone. I'll give it a good home....Scott

I would love to try a device like this. I currently use DSM-520 and this one would be a nice upgrade, I think.
thanks,

Why? Because a little elf told me that I'm on Santa's "naughty" list and will not be receiving one under the tree this year.

Because when I got into the industry I told my family we were going "all in" and canceled the cable. They are now completely dependent on Netflix, Hulu, and an HD antenna for the local channels. So, another way to access content would be very welcome. C'mon Dan -- do it for the kids! :-) Happy holidays everyone.

this sounds amazing and would allow me to watch movies a little easier with netflix and it's something I couldn't get on my own for a long time i'm sure.

The Roku would be great. I currently connect my laptop to my TV to watch Netflix streams. But it is a real pain as I have to disconnect my DVD player and use an S video cord for the video and RCA jacks that convert to the headphone jack that I plug into my laptop. A Roku device would cause me to watch much more streaming video on my TV.

to roku or not is the q - for everyone else that is. For us, a small startup, it's the only way to start cranking in some moola. We have a standard dev box now and are testing our media offerings, but would be great to have another box that we can both test new 1080p content, and use it as our demo box. money is tight - hence the leap at a giveaway :) cheers.

The Roku concept is really interesting, we are also testing the capabilites as we want to integrate our content with this box. Because we already have the box, we started our research. I know YouTube have something similar at http://www.youtube.com/xl but we want to bring this at a higher standard. Here is a part of our work: www.thehdstandard.com

Online video is the future. I have been working with my artists on streaming video live and taped applications for the last 6 months. Streaming video from artists and the Roku player fits in that mold with your TV as your destination for consuming content. My goal isn't to save the music industry but give thought to online and streaming video as a viable channel for fans and artists to interact. Roku should be expanding and I look forward to utilizing this box and hopefully its future applications.

I would love to have a Roku, we don't have cable upstairs and it'd be great for watching Netflix and Revision3! Thanks!

Our company was one of the first to make our video downloadable to TiVo's from Amazon Video on Demand (then, Unbox). So to have a Roku unit would be a big plus for our R & D into the future...a big plus for anyone. Thanks Roku.

I still don't have any kind of video streaming device hooked up to my TV/Entertainment center.
This brings shame upon my family and my ancestors.
