Apple's iPad Has Major Design Flaw, No Built-In Stand For Watching Video

Hardware-01-20100127 Aside from the fact that Apple's new iPad won't support Flash video, how on earth could Apple design a device that forces you to keep it flat at all times? Does Apple really think people want to hold a 10" screen in front of their face, at eye level, for two hours while watching a movie? The fact you have to keep this flat, on your lap, really keeps it from being used for video applications. Not designing a built-in stand up so that you can stand up the iPad on a table is a huge design flaw on Apple's part.

While the Apple website already shows one of the cases that you will be able to buy for the iPad that also double as a stand, that functionality should be built in. With the iPhone or iPod Touch, I can understand the lack of a built in stand as the device is small and most are not using it for extended periods of time. But the whole point of the iPad is to use it for interactive applications like video and with a 10" screen, share it with others. I should not have to buy a third-party case just to be able to use the device the way it was intended, with the functionality that's needed for video.

For a company that is so smart, I'm still amazed as how Apple makes such glaring mistakes like this.

I am disappointed that Apple seems to once again have made the decision to take its loyal customers to the cleaners on price. It's just going to reinforce all the subtle price comments that I've heard since joining a basically Windows world. I've given up pointing out the obvious that iMacs are pretty competitively priced.

Wow there are some Apple fanboys on here.....

The lack of a stand is indeed a either a ridiculous oversight from apple or a revenue-driven scam. Unfortunately, more likely to be the latter since Apple lapdogs have routinely shown themselves to be willing to buy any and all accessories rather than insist the product came with these as standard. No issue with Apple here as if i had these type of customers I'd rip them off too.

Anyone who thinks a stand cannot be integrated into an iPad without spoiling aesthetics has no idea at all about design. I know 3-4 different simple, elegant ways to do this within the time I've spent reading these comments here.

Bottom line is that if Apple had included this necessary feature all the Apple junkies would be cooing about how cool it was......

So the incredible designers at apple can't design a functional, durable integrated stand? Come on. I could do it. They want you to buy accessories. And despite the fact that they do make some nice products, at heart they are pretty anti consumer.

If you want to see a really unique design for an iPad stand, check out the "eazel". It has multiple articulations allowing the iPad to be placed anywhere in 3D space with the screen angled so that it is perpendicular to the viewer's line of sight. Here's the link: www.eazel-stand.com

Since apple introduced Dock it seems like it has been highly recommended by the user's of apple and helped them in increasing their revenue.

The iPhone is also used for watching video but it doesn't have a stand on its body. But there are thousands of accessories that can cater this need.

No matter the flaw, apple never ceases to amaze us. Its innovative ideas make us what we are now--technologically speaking.

Its what sells to the customers, have a pro. video for them to see of your service.

I have always thought that Apple's stuff are too round shaped.. For instance iPhone 3.I really don't like the design on them. The 4'th version is better design.-Abel

So true, Apple is making one mistake after the other. The first was Mac, Then the iPhone, and now the iPad;-p Lol.._Ray.J.

This is a great point, no stand?? How could Apple forget this....

I can understand the no stand but how about color options? Maybe Pink or Blue models, I mean this is Apple....

There are also very specialized cases that let you take them while you fly. The boxes are quite light weight and they do not ask you to pay much as duty fees. They are extra protective when compared to the other cases. They have a protective coating of foam. When you buy cases, only go for customized ones that are specific to equipment because it has to remain safe and tight when they are traveling. Too much of shaking will lead to hitting on the sides of the case itself and thereby causing damage to the equipment.

Very true. I have also heard many people complaining about this issue. I think Apple should try to resolve all these issues. It damages the marketing and reputation of there product.

Totally agree with the recent comments. Why in the world would I want a little kick-stand, sticking out in the back of my beautiful thin iPad?
