Free Giveaway: Win Vizio’s New $99 Co-Star Streaming Box

I’ve just posted a review of Vizio’s new $99 Co-Star streaming media box and as part of the review, I’m giving away one brand new unit to a lucky reader of my blog.

To enter the drawing, all you have to do is leave one comment on this post and make sure you submit the comment with a valid email. The drawing is open to anyone with a mailing address in the U.S. and I will select the winner at random in September. Good luck! The drawing is now over. Congrats to Andy S. who won the item.

And if you like free stuff, I’m also giving away two Google Nexus 7 Tablets.

  • GadgetDon

Looks like an interesting box. I have the AppleTV here. The passthrough sounds interesting.

How’s the Amazon Instant Video support? I suppose you have to enter those account settings, same account entry system? That strikes me as the setup annoyance factor of all these devices, surprised someone hasn’t thrown a small web server into one that you log in with the web browser and can setup through there.

  • nick smith

I have the revue and I love the pass through technology but lie you said, it has a beta feel to it. Thinking about getting one for the parents.

  • http://joshuahoover.com/ Joshua Hoover

Competition is good, though I wonder about Google TV’s future. The launch was lackluster and Google is notorious for releasing promising products and then letting them die. Either way, I’m happy to see more devices like this come out.

  • GaryM

So I’m wondering if this is an open API leaving the door open for a third-party app to use my iPhone or tablet as a replacement remote? Also, you didn’t mention Vizio support but presume like other Vizio products it’s 24X7?

  • http://www.johncblandii.com John C. Bland II

What about Google TV feels “beta” to you?

  • Patrick

    And now I’m entered!

  • cb

    Putting in my entry :)

  • Ronald Buelow

I like the features of the costar, and I love the price.

  • Russ

Sad to hear TiVo integration is slow. I’m also very interested in Plex performance.

  • lon van wyck

I am interested in receiving the device. thanks

  • Vikash Harlalka

Seems like a great device. Would love to have one.

  • Jim

I have been checking Vizio`s site everyday. This would be easier.

  • Hari

    Nice review.

  • robert

it would be a great addition to my vizio hd tv

  • David

I’ve got the Roku XS and I sure wish that I had waited a little while longer for the Vizio. I like the idea of pass-through and DLNA the Vizio has.

  • Dan

    I’m in!

  • Brian

Been looking to get one but missed out on the preorders

  • Jason

I have a Roku XS and am pretty unimpressed at this point. Hopefully this is better.

  • roadrunner

Nice post ! I am sad to know that it won’t support Epix . Since Dish network restricted all the forigen content from Roku , Vizo Co Star has a huge potential for non English IPTV channels.

  • James

I would love this box, I’ve been on the fence about google TV since launch but after seeing this box back at CES I knew this was the one for me. Been checking vizio’s website for weeks waiting for it to be back in stock.

  • gambit410

    Me please!

  • cmikel

Looks like a good addition to the GoogleTV lineup. Count me in.

  • jeff smith

I am looking to ditch cable/the dish and replace it with this sort of device. Sounds like this may be the best option out there.

  • Chris

Been wanting to try a Google TV device for a while now.

  • Raj Etta

Thanks for the review, looking forward to getting one

  • Chambras

Oh yeah I love Google TV Specially since I cut cable like 2 years ago!

  • 503Matt

Need something to replace my Revue. +1

  • Wildy

I have a Roku 2 XS which support HDMI output, but my biggest problem with it is that it doesn’t support DLNA streaming yet. Being a huge Android fan I’m sure I could put the Co-Star to good use. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • MarioS

I would love to test drive this box I’ve so count me in ;)

  • Mac

    I’d take it

  • ronfil56

  • Iggy

The Co-Star’s HDMI pass through and Google TV integration sound promising. I also like that the remote has an integrated touchpad and QWERTY keyboard. I’m liking the direction that Vizio’s heading in. The Verge had a good article about the company before it launched its first family of Windows PCs.

  • Chris Imes

Been wanting one of these since I saw them revealed earlier this year! Thanks for the giveaway. :)

  • Seb

    Awesome

  • Joshua

  • Jamie

Is the box capable of playing content purchased through the Google Play store, or are we being forced to purchase a Nexus Q to play content on a tv? Thanks!

    I can only dream!

  • Matthew Lee

Well they won’t let me buy one on their site so my only hope is to win one here!

I wonder when these will be available, I might have to buy one! …or maybe I’ll be luck and win one somehow :)

  • nextgin

I have been trying to get this box for a month now (Pre-Order). I like it cause it has the three streaming services I use (Netflix, Amazon, HBO Go) plus G-TV. For $100, this is the perfect Fall/Winter device.

  • Code

    I’d like one!

  • Tico

we love to get one!!! great review

  • Tico

I would love to get my hands on one, great info

  • kingofmyworld324

Thanks for the great review! Also good to hear they are fixing 5.1! That was my main concern with the passthrough.

  • James Stathis

You’re review makes me want to get one! If the remote had voice input (for speed) it’d be perfect.

  • lostchemist

I have a WD TV Live that we use primarily for playing local files
on an attached hard drive. I’m
interested in whether or not this unit will play ISO files. A fair number of my movies are in that
format. I can see that it is not one of
the formats listed, but maybe a Google TV app will allow for their playback.

  • E-Man

I was really hoping this Co-Star remote was backlit. There are so many times I’ve been frustrated watching my Logitech Revue wishing the keyboard lit up in the dark.

  • pslegacy

Thx for the review! Looks like a good little box to pair with my TV

  • purecharger

Why didn’t you test local content playback? How is the network browsing interface?

  • Ranjit Bhaskar

Based on your review, I think Google TV would get more popular with Costart. I would like to get the Costar too. :)

    me!

  • jtship

    Thanks for the review.

  • gabgizzard

Thanks for the great review. Looking forward to trying out the Co-star if I can get a hold of one. Thinking of using it almost solely as an easy way to get an on-screen interface for Google Music that can be controlled with an IR universal remote (harmony) that anyone in my family can use. Of course it does a ton of other stuff, so I’ll be exploring Google TV as well! Thanks again! – Gordon

  • Emilio

  • wkamik

Cool hardware. Would love to get my hands on one of these. I already have a Roku 2 XS and love it but Co-Star integrates with live TV.

  • James

Since this is GoogleTV, can you hook up a webcam and do video chat like you could with the Logitech box?

  • peppy6582

I love the idea of this little box. I would like to be able to watch TV and browse the internet at the same time.

  • http://profiles.google.com/jhc.starner Justin Cessna

Sounds like round 2 of awesome SAUCE!

  • jwalhol

It would be nice to test this out.

  • Ryan Schnell

Great Review, I really want to grab one of these soon!

  • Steve T

This box sounds pretty cool, good review

  • JH

    Thanks for the review.

  • Loga

Sounds great, I would like to have that!

  • untruehero

Nice review, I’m thinking about grabbing one when they sell it to the general public. The google TV part at $99 is what is really selling me on the device.

  • D1zzl3

I didn’t pre-order cuz they were charging $10 for shipping and I’m sure Best Buy or Costco will carry this product retail for the same price – shipping. As long as it’s better than my WDTV Live Streaming box I’m buying it as soon as it’s released to stores. Unless I win it here, of course. ;)

  • scuter

I’ve been looking for a box like this to keep my 2 year old entertained! scuter_99@yahoo.com

i really liked your review for vizios co- star hope they will have vudu and blockbuster on demand in the future.

  • alice

I enjoy your comments and I want a vizio co-star.

  • http://www.facebook.com/danielhidalgo Daniel Hidalgo

This device looks great and has a lot of features that I want. As for Hulu Plus and the other apps could you use something like Playon as a substitute and still pull them in?

  • Geoff Fox

Wow! More choices. The good news is all these boxes are works in progress as long as software updates keep coming.

  • Joe

Cant wait to get this to put netflix/streaming vid back into my living room! Have a WMC7 PC setup that was in there but due to low GFAF its now in the bedroom and we have a regular cable box in the living room. I think this would be the best of both worlds with the HDMI pass through.

If they only made GTV software for windows PCs and it supported cablecard id be happy to convert. :p

  • Brian Quinn

Looking forward to reading more reviews. Maybe time to upgrade the roku.

  • http://www.facebook.com/johntexasleftwich John Leftwich

  • Ben Taylor

Thanks for the early review I have been contemplating this box but missed the per order. Can’t wait to get my hands on one of these bad boys

  • Ray Crowl

Sounds like I will have to check out the Co-Star one way or another just a bit leery about the remote. Not being back lit makes things a bit difficult for late night viewing having to turn a light on everytime you want to make an adjustment or whatever. But as you said it does have Google TV and I am all about Google. rrayzer@gmail.com

  • Chezitman

Looks really cool… hopefully more apps pop up on this.

  • arthurkirkland

Looks like holding off on the Logitech Revue might have been the right move after all…looks like a winner!

  • Shncarter

Been wanting to try out the Google TV ecosystem for a while now!

    Cheers for the review Dan.

I’ve been looking into Vizio as an option for a main TV display, the price is right, particularly with it also being American made.

  • http://twitter.com/thakidb thakidb

Good review. I was wondering if you knew of the Plex App and if so could you review it on the Vizio Co-Star. Thanks in advance.

  • Mycosyco

Thanks for your take on the Co-Star. I’m looking around for the best streaming box.

  • AG

    Looks like a good box.

  • Beny Levy

I’ve used the Revue before. You make an EXTREMELY valid point about Google TV feeling like a beta. The same problem is only now starting to be addressed with Android devices. I’m very curious to see how much better the Co-Star feels than the Revue.

  • waterson

i enjoyed the review and think I’m more interested in winning a co star than purchasing one. Thanks for the timely review

  • Joel Rivera

    i want one!!

  • Beth

I would love to give this a try. All we have used for streaming is roku.

    Win

  • Robert Yoon

I hope to get the opportunity to give this little box a try!

  • ap.miltiadou

Good review. I was expecting the Vizio to perform better so winning the free giveaway is better than purchasing.

  • Andrew Taylor

I’m glad reviews are finally trickling out for this device!

  • Ron Booth

Great review. Just what I need.

  • Danny

I want one. I just when the the purchase of a new TV, some have all this stuff in them. But that could be limiting because you have the entire price of the TV and this interface in one body. I decided to get a 60″ Plasma without all this stuff on board, and use a Set top box like the ROKU (which I have) or the Co-Star (which I would like to win) as an upgraded able peripheral to the TV.

  • Julian Cran

Thank you so much for the review

  • Julian Cran

Thanks for the review. As an early adopter of the Revue, I have been waiting over 2 years for this platform really work.

  • Habros

Any idea if it has ability to turn ON/OFF the TV trough HDMI?

  • Alex Romanauskas

Already have a Roku but was just thinking I needed an WD for my main tv might have to rethink that with a vizio if it streams local content well.

  • Jim

Great review. I have a Vizio tv and sound bar and have been very happy with the quality. It sounds like the co-star is on par wit the same quality.

As a Logitech Revue owner, I seek a working version of Google TV. I wonder if any full keyboards can be made to link. Seems my slider smartphone may be the best near-in alternative. Thanks for the review and the sweepstakes.

    Thanks for the review!

  • Sachin

Interestin, but I was hoping for a few more things in the review. Was the Co-star stable?, I understand the Google TV has has it’s share of issues with respect to that. Did you try the DLNA? Was it easy to play stuff from your PC? Does it work with all cable boxes? Guides etc? Anyway, thanks for having this giveaway.

  • bbjrod

I pre-ordered and set up my Co-Star this weekend. A bit disappointed and it definitely could do with a backlight on the remote, but I’m still getting the hang of using it! And, I definitely want a bluetooth keyboard to use with it!

  • Tomberry

    Excellent

  • jb82

    Yes please!

  • PTR

I have a concern as there have been some articles indicating that “The three major U.S. television networks–ABC, CBS and NBC–are reportedly blocking full episode video streaming from their Websites to Google TV devices.” Since Hulu Plus does not handle all networks I was hoping I could use this for streaming from the networks. Is that accurate?

  • Justin O’Brien

What a great website, keep up the great in-depth reviews. Hope I win! Thanks

  • Haltor Keselifil

Let’s see if equiso going to be any good

  • Lauren Wolfe

I’m glad to see a review such as this since I’ve recently read that the Co-Star is kinda glitchy but honestly, I still want it. I’m all about the Goog life.

  • John Fusco

Thanks for the review! Would love to win one.

  • ian1266

Can’t wait to try one of these and see if it will replace my roku.

  • Scottie

I’ve seen the co-star and was late getting in on the pre-order, but sometimes am nervous to be the first anyway (my bud had problems with an early Roku). I have the Roku, but after seeing the website and your review, I am hooked and looking forward to adding the co-star to my arsenal. Thanks for the review as well as the follow-up review with the answers to the questions. I am glad I have several HDMI ports so I can keep my Roku (Hulu) and add the co-star. Fav feature, you can browse the web from your TV…long overdue for such a great price!!

  • Petey

    I can’t wait to give the Co-Star a try

  • BreezeTDK

I use a Popcorn Hour A110 & a Sony Bluray player for all of my streaming needs right now and I am very interested in the Co-Star. Thank you for the reviews and please enter me in the contest.

nice review, i need this now

  • RC

I was talking to my wife the other night about being able to surf the net on the TV without having to purchase an expensive “Google TV”. I told her there’s got to be a device that will allow a person that flexibility for a fraction of the cost of a new TV? THANKS for the post!! You answered my questions and gave me some other devices for comparison.

  • Katie Pollard

Thanks for the review. Would love to get my hands on one of these.

  • EC

Thanks for the review. I have been researching ways to replace my current provider and the only thing I was missing was a convenient way to stream TV from the internet. It seems like the Co-Star solves that for me. I would love to have this box.

  • ACE

    Good review.

  • James Kelly

I just bought a Sony/Google TV set top box, but am hoping the Vizio has a better interface. The Sony’s is pretty clunky, although it does what I need it to do: stream soccer from various services (ESPN3, MLS Live, FoxSoccer2Go) in near HD.

  • Jhon1

Very good review about the vizio co-star

  • CityZen

I wonder what percentage of the available Google Apps work on this box?

  • KJS

Do you have to have a cable box/active account to use the Co-Star?

  • Amit Samria

Thanks for the review. I hope it will available soon.

  • Les

I think that Google TV (Vizio) may have edge over it’s competition for me since it can access the internet. The price point is appealing but getting one for free is more appealing. Thanks

  • Vipul

I really liked your review of the Vizio Co-star! I’m impressed by the box, and am waiting to buy it, once it becomes available.

  • callanish

Nice prize to give away. Thanks!

  • rdarlin2

Give me one… ! YES!! I have a Roku 1st gen and am looking for an easy way to web browse on my TV.

How similar is this with the HiSense that was just announced for $99 also?

  • larry

thanks for the email informing me about the new stock coming soon from Vizio

  • Derek

Thanks for the review. This box looks exciting! Hopefully XBMC will be ported to it some day :)

  • Victor Uribe

This device certainly looks interesting and at a starting price lower than the revue it’s no wonder it sells out so quick.

  • rcrh

I’m really keen to see more people get their hands on this box. Specifically I’m hoping someone from the XBMC team gets their fantastic media software to run on it.

  • Jim

    I want one

  • Tantien

Not clear if this is where I need to post or the original post, so I’ll do both! Sounds like a good second to Roku. I don’t need the sports and am not a Hulu Plus subscriber.

  • Mike

VIZIO ROCKS! We have a 37″ LCD 1080 High Definition TV and have never had any problems with it in 4 years. Have done a bunch of research and cannot wait to get the Vizio Co-Star for the internet surfing feature on Google Chrome. OR maybe I will win one, wouldn’t that be cool. It would be a first in my 56 years here in Gods awesome presence. Take Care, Mike —- peoriabud@gmail.com

  • JTS193

    eye-opening review – thanks, Dan!

  • Joey Heck

I would love to replace my Revue with this.

  • Mike

I’m extremely interested in this device. I’m a recent cord-cutter and think this will make my transition easier. I’m definitely suffering from withdrawal though lol.

  • manuelant

I really like the specs of this box… Can you play games with it? like angry birds?

  • Bryanna Herzog

I’m interested to know how the average consumer is feeling about these devices. Are just the techie people buying them or is the soccer mom wondering if this will save her money while giving the kids something to enjoy.

  • Walter Williams

Roku just crapped out, so would love to give the Co-Star a spin

  • Jason Mauney

Great review can’t WAIT to get mine!!! Thanks!!!

  • Cuong Vu

Hi just want to enter the free give away for this Costar

  • hanaya

I would like to win a Vizio Co-Star. Thanks!

  • Dennis Sedlacko

I have the Vizio CoStar, and overall I
am pleased with it. No problems with Google Chrome. I do have a
question on the wifi access. I have a 42” 1½
year old Vizio SV422XVT Smart TV that has the Yahoo Connected
TV. I also have a Vizio XWR Dual Band Router. I can connect my Yahoo
Connected TV to the Vizio HD Dual Band wifi, which is optimized for
HD Video streaming and operates at about (5 GHz). My Vizio CoStar
cannot get or access the the “Vizio HD” wifi. “Vizio HD” does
not show up on open networks. The CoStar only receives the “Vizio”
(At 2.4 GHz) and “Classic” (Lower than 2.4GHz) single band
    network.

I called Vizio support and was told the
Vizio CoStar is only single band, it can’t access dual band. I was
just wondering if that information is correct, since I use a Vizio
dual band router. I have not had any buffering problems and get
Netflix Ok with the CoStar. Also wondering if my Vizio SV422XVT TV
will be eventually switched to a full or partial Google TV or will it
    keep the Yahoo Connected TV.

  • Penny

Thanks for the review. Putting the Co-Star on my wish list and keeping an eye on updates to it.

  • brenton meeks

This thing looks and sounds amazing, Ive always wanted a Google TV device if it was Sony’s or someone else but have never read a review as good as this one, Im in. To bad there still out of stock :( who knows may be i can win one lol, wishful thinking thanks for the excellent review.

  • Flinks

This seems great for emulators and general geekiness! Hopefully the hdmi passthrough thingy will prove useful.

  • b21wayne

I’ve just ordered one of these and am really looking forward to seeing how it does. I have a Vizio LCD with internet apps and is does a good job. I’m interested in seeing how the browser does on the co-star. The TV doesn’t have a full browser.

  • Wineaux

For those of you who have one, does it support SRT subtitle files when playing MP4 video files off the USB port? I have a large collection of H.264 MP4′s that I need to use with their attendant SRT’s for playback off of an external HDD, and need to make sure that the Co-Star supports subtitle files before I pull the trigger on this one.

  • Wineaux

Also, does anyone know if this is infected with Cinavia?

  • http://www.facebook.com/SeanMJOBrien Sean O’Brien

    Oh man, I want one…

  • Jimmy the Geek

Great in depth review! Finally a place where I could get the straight scoup on this device. No company advertising just the facts from a consumer’s point of view. Thanks you and keep up the good work!

  • http://www.facebook.com/azcardfan Shel Don

Great review, I have been watching these and am very interested in replacing my crappy logitech revue asap. I missed the pre-order opportunity so am eagerly awaiting my chance to order one possibly more for my other rooms

  • T.R.

This review is spontaneously vivid. It is tremendously exquisite. If your goal was to systematically and erratically get me interested in the Vizio Co Star, you are a success my friend. Plus winning a Co Star would be the best birthday present by far. Thank you in advance.

  • Anne Lesher

We ditched our cable and are really hoping the Co-Star is what we are looking for. Great to get some feedback on performance!

  • Patrick Ogurick

I remember being excited about this product when it was announced. Just cancelled cable and am in the market for a streaming set top box. Thank you for the input!

I have the revue as well as the integrated 46″ Sony Google TV. Both are a bit laggy with some javascript animations that I’m developing. Wondering how much snappier the chrome browser is with the dual core.
    Thanks!

I’ve never heard of this streaming device before the review but would love to try it out!

  • Steven C

Had great hopes for this box thinking that the inclusion of a Chrome browser would allow me to watch Hulu (not H+), CBS.com, thecw.com, etc. I am now hearing that most of these site block their video playback on these devices. Is this true? I would love to win this box to evaluate!

  • hellojody

Hello, I would love to have this thanks for posting

  • longwalker

I’m not sure where second and third tier devices like this Vizio fit in against Apple TV and Roku as they lack the “walled garden” of Apple and it’s content providers and the open channels of the Roku.

  • Roar

Thanks for the review, Dan! I”m eager to see how Google TV can gain traction with decent support. DLNA and local playback – Very excited for this box!

  • Mark Laughlin

  • Prashant

want to try Vizio box and see if this could break the record of appleTV / Roku as best streaming device in market. Glad Google TV platform is making its way into streaming devices too…

  • greatseapenguin

Watch out Apple, Roku, Vizio, WD, Boxee and other set top streaming devices. Google and Sony have partnered and have released their Sony Google TV unit. There are many press articles stating that they plan to directly take on Apple TV in a head to head battle. While relatively pricey at $199, it’s fully Android compatible. Further Google and Sony both have the money and marketing prowess to push their box into large scale acceptance. Let the battle royale begin…

  • Ron Fedele

cant seem to buy one I WANT!!!!!

  • Brick

Great review I may hold out on this one

  • Joe Anderson

good review, still on the fence

  • John

I love the Roku and have the Sony as well. The Remote use ease also sells me on the Roku but I’m interested in how this Vizio will do.

  • Ralph

Very interesting unit, I will check this one out. I wonder how well the DLNA feature works (and whether it works as a push renderer, like WDTV live does).

  • Neil

Had not heard of this one before! I have a couple of Roku’s, and a Logitech Revue – curious as to how this compares head-to-head… still looking for my perfect set-top box!

  • Anthony Dawson

I’ve been considering getting one of these instead of a second apple tv. Use hem primarily for plex. Of course winning one would solve my dilemma. :D

  • Radek

Cool, I’ll be getting one for my parents and myself as soon as these are available for order again. Great review, thanks.

  • paul

    Gimme Gimme.

  • GraphicDesignNY

Thanks for the good articles on these set top boxes. Im looking for a new addition to my media setup that will work with my NAS drive and portable devices. I might just go with a wifi enable flat panel if all else fails. But I would like a set top device if it will be seamless as they claim,

  • Lord Of War

    Keep up the good work.

  • Lord Of War

the sony smp-n200 seems like a good alternative

  • Streaming Man

Like the blog. No 1 else writing about all the streaming choices.

Since Logitech pretty much dropped support for the Revue, I’d love a replacement box that will keep getting updates.

With all the reviews that tag this box as less than stellar, I can’t bring myself to spend my hard earned cash on one. My baseline is Roku and it still seems to be on top in my book.

  • Rob R

Great Review, Maybe I’ll get lucky and you’ll send me one of these bad boys :)

  • Rob

I’m trying to compare this to the Sony NSZ-GT1. Looks like the only difference is the Blu-Ray. Thanks for the review

I have a mailing address in the US and a friend who lives there.
As I just got shafted by Vizio after placing the order and actually paying, that they don’t accept foreign credit cards (even though it’s a mastercard) I’m bleak about not getting the Co-Star now. WOULD LOVE TO WIN IT!!!! radmtbman@gmail.com

  • Jottle

the big question is when/if amazon instant will ever make it over. Probably not!

With owning a couple of apple products for some time now, It’s been difficult to figure out if I should try other “ecosystems”. Thankfully I have not invested too much into iTunes store and still get most of my content from other sources. Now after waiting soo long for the announcement of the iPhone 5, I was disappointed and frustrated, but then again that’s the game of technology,

I think I’m ready to try something else ,,,vizio co star might be a good start

  • Dallas Cantland

Sounds like a great device. With all the online TV currently available, you might eventually forego your cable provider.

  • MP

Sounds like a winner for me.

  • Ragu

Can anyone share the actual experience of using the box?

The Vizio has many feature the others dont have. A composite video connection would make the unit more versital. I’m glad to see Vizio releasing updates to some common issues. I Enjoyed the article.

I tried the boxee but was quite dissapointed. Have an apple TV but still find it is missing some capabilities that should be standard. After reading your post I will definitely give this a try. I am slowly converting my life over to Google ….yikes.
