To go with the review, I am giving away one Roku 3 device to a lucky reader of my blog. To enter the drawing, all you have to do is leave one comment on this post and make sure you submit the comment with a valid email address. The drawing is open to anyone with a mailing address in the U.S. and the winner will be selected at random later this month. Good luck!     It’s been interesting to see how the big 3 have evolved and grown over the years: Roku, Apple TV, Boxee. Seems to me Roku is leading the pack — releasing their SDK for developers to build custom channels was the winning move; it was a bit of an inflection point for them, and precisely when Boxee really started to fall behind.

    Interesting that Roku keeps innovating and we might see others catching up. Key is to have airplay like features on Roku for videos from smart phones. Apple also needs to come thing ground breaking else they might keep lagging behind in the game.

    Great article comparing the Apple TV and the Roku. In our home we have both. We have the Roku in our bedroom and the Apple TV in our living room. Apple TV is great for AirPlay and iTunes library content (mostly our own ripped kid DVDs – thanks Handbrake!) , the Roku dominates the Netflix usage. I’d say 90%+ of Netflix is via the old 1st gen Roku we have. Hope I win this one!

    I didn’t realize the Roku 2s were using such an old chipset. I only upgraded to the 2 a few months back (after getting the my earlier Roku a couple of months before the 2s came out).

    My families biggest complaints w/our Roku 2 XS has been the lack of YouTube and the sluggish interface. Looks like this takes care of one of those! We’ve tried Plex and VideoBuzz, but those just don’t cut it. Miracast support might help.

    So far I have been very happy with my Roku HD! The Roku 3 sounds as though it would blow mine out of the water though! Faster loading and less buffering time sound great! I also like the idea of being able to plug the earphones into the remote. I wonder if that uses a standard earphone jack which are the same as on a computer or most cell phones?     Since I just purchased the Roku 2 XS less than a month ago, I seriously doubt I’m gonna run out and purchase the Roku 3 anytime soon. However, I have NO objections to winning one :-)

    Roku 3 has two features that make it very tempting though. The ability for private listening through the remote earphones and the newly designed user interface which will be available as an update to Roku 2 owners next month.

    I almost – almost – returned my recently-purchased Roku 2XS to order the 3; but the dealbreaker was the lack of standard sound-out on the 3 (I have an older HDTV that doesn’t allow for HD sound-in, so I have to use the 2XS’s standard sound cables for this). Bummer, because I hate how slow the 2XS’s UI operates. Ah well.

    At 70yrs of age, I have all but given up on cable. The price and selection of TV shows and movies geared towards me, just was not there anymore. My son brought by his Roku for me to see what he had been talking about, taking cables place. That was a few weeks ago, and I still have it. This is a dream for older folks.     Really can not afford cable tv any more because of monthly increases in service charges.

    So I bought a $15 TV antenna and now get 15 local channels, but I really miss the movies.
    A friend has an HD Roku and he tells me that for 8 bucks a month he get Netflicks and can always find something good to watch on tv. He also gets Crackle which is free and loaded with movies also.

    Now he pays $58 a month for his internet connection and Netflicks.
    The earphones look like a great idea because I am half deaf and can only watch tv when I am home alone because the Wife hollers when I turn the tv up so I can hear it.
    I hope the price comes down after awhile, and I will look for sales because this Roku 3 looks like a great product that would really let me enjoy tv again.

    We just ‘cut the cord’ last week and got a Roku 2 XS. As usual, the minute we bought something the next version was released, LOL. Was a little disappointed that we could not use the TWC TV app (we live in an area monopolized by Comcast), but all the other features still make it worth it. I’m wondering how the new Roku 3 holds up with PlayOn (perhaps another blog topic…?). Kudos on the blog, and also to Roku. Cheers!

    The original article was a good write-up of the new features. I gave an XS to my gf as a birthday gift a few months back; it’s now displaced the cable. We were just wondering today how the Roku could be improved; she’s had zero complaints, but the headphones in the remote alone would justify an upgrade (she’s a light sleeper, I’m a night owl which is why I don’t use the Roku :) ). At any rate, kudos for the review of the new box.

    Thanks for your review of the Roku 3. The Roku 3 seems tempting enough for me to get one to replace my Roku XS. The WiFi is often a problem on the XS so with the stronger WiFi and the optional ethernet port on the Roku 3 that problem should be resolved.

    I also like the USB port feature to play my Mp4 and MKV video files (I am a videographer).

    We ditched cable and have been using Netflix and Hulu Plus for a few years now. Last year, we received a Roku box from a content provider for free. WOW! What an innovative little box! I can’t imagine we went that long without it. So easy to use, with so many fun features. Looking forward to the Roku 3 for games and the headphones… What a great idea!

    While technically the Roku may be the only $99 box with those dedicated apps, the Visio CoStar can access virtually anything on the net for the same price.and now has a dedicated Amazon app instead of the crappy weblink on other GTVs.

    Roku 3 Downside: No official Podcast app. There is a private iTunes channel that’s ok, but not great. With podcasts and video casts providing lots of choices, I just don’t understand why Roku can’t ship a decent solution for this. Still, I’d like to win the 3 :)

    I have a Samsung TV with an Apple TV box. It works well as I watch Netflix movies.

    Now, I bot a second Samsung TV and want to buy a ROKU 3 as it has the earphone feature. This second TV is in the other room. Will there be any conflict between the Apple and the Roku 3 if I act on this?
    Now, I am hard of hearing so the ROKU 3 feature is appealing to us as I may be able to listen to Netflix without disturbing the household. Get me?

    I have been a longtime Apple user but chose the Roku over Apple TV starting with the Roku XDS which has serve me well over the years. Recently, I got the Roku 3 and am impressed with the improved interface, dual band wifi and other enhancements. The remote is very well done and the audio port is a plus. My caveat was the exclusion of audio ports, which I use to run through my legacy amplifier audio system. I attempted to route the signal through the TV back to amp but alas went back to using the XDS for audio until I implement a more elegant solution. Someone recommended an HDMI splitter.
