Send In Your Questions For George Kliavkoff, Chief Digital Officer of NBC Universal

George Next week at Streaming Media East, I'll be interviewing George Kliavkoff, Chief Digital Officer of NBC Universal for the keynote spot on Tuesday, May 20th, starting at 9am. While I have a whole list of question of my own and will be opening up much of the keynote for questions from the audience, I'd also like to find out what topics you want to hear George discuss.

George has nicely agreed to answer as many questions as possible from those submitted and cover as many topics that we have time for during his hour-long interview session. Now is your chance to get your questions in so they can be included. Even if you can't make it to the show, add your question to the  comments section. We'll be recording and archiving the keynote and ever other conference session in video and will make it free for viewing after the event.

While George has done a lot of interviews with the media, spoken at events and has talked about a lot of facets of NBC Universal's business, there is so much more to cover. Please send in all questions via the comments section.

Keynote Speakers Wanted: Streaming Media West

Smwest_logo_3 While the East show is next week, I am already in the planning stages for the Streaming Media West show, which takes place a bit earlier than usual this year. Still located at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, this year's show will be from September 23-25, with pre-conference workshops on Monday September 22nd.

My early planning thoughts are that I will have four-six keynote spots available at the West show. As always, I am looking for customers, end users and those who are creating, producing and delivering online video content over the web. Ideal keynotes are those who are from well-known companies, are considered thought leaders in their field or are considered a really hot company that is getting a lot of media attention. While I may have one vendor keynote, I am not looking for vendor submissions, but am looking for vendor customers. So if you have a customer who would be a good fit, send me an e-mail ASAP.

I'm also interested in getting introductions to Amazon's Web Services group and Endemol USA as well as all ad agencies.

At the Streaming Media East show on Wednesday May 21st, Eric Rosser Eldon from VentureBeat.com will be leading a session entitled "Online Video: Should Content Creators Get a Cut?". Meanwhile, the largest video site in the country, YouTube, barely pays its content producers anything. Some venture capitalists sense an opportunity, and are moving south from Silicon Valley to create new entertainment companies that in many instances put the writers—and directors and actors—in control. Learn what the role of content producers is in digital media, and how working with them can help your business.

Confirmed speakers include:

Streaming Media Europe: Call For Speakers Open, New Hire Announcement

Smeurope_logo After two successful shows in London, we'll be back again this year on October 16-17th with our third Streaming Media Europe conference and exhibition. We've moved the show to the Novotel London West hotel, which gives us a larger location with more exhibit and meeting space to accommodate the shows growth.

I'm also please to announce that along with the new location, we've also added some new employees and some additional help for the Europe show. I will be stepping down from the conference chairman role this year and turning that over to Eric Schumacher-Rasmussen, the editor of StreamingMedia.com. With the success of the U.S. based shows and the amount of time those take to organize, I simply can't be in so many places at once. I will still be involved in helping shape the conference content, but won't be the point of contact for speaker proposals.

We are also happy to announce that we have hired Eileen Broch, a veteran conference organizer who is based in London and will be working with Eric to shape the program and selection of speakers. Eileen has spent many years in the conference business including organizing the first two JavaOne conferences ever produced by Sun. She has also held positions at Yahoo! Europe and Skype.

With the program organizers now in place, the call for speakers and papers is open. The deadline is May 15th and the website has all of the details on what we are looking for in the way of papers, speaker requirements and all the other details. If you want to really get involved this year and moderate or organize your own session, contact Eric or Eileen right away.

I do regret that I won't be able to make it out to Streaming Media Europe this year, but Eric and Eileen will do a great job leading the content focus for the show. Speaking spots go fast, so get your submission in ASAP!

Last Minute Speaking Spots Open: Streaming Media East

The program for the Streaming Media East conference in May closes today and is being shipped off to the printers. I have three speaking spots that have opened up last minute and are accepting all speaking requests. The first two sessions are panel spots, the third session is a moderator position. Please don't submit for the moderator position unless you are willing to do the work that is required of being a moderator. Originally I was going to moderate that session myself but am now looking for someone to take it over. If you are interested in any of these three spots, contact me ASAP as they will be filled today.

All submissions for any of the three spots MUST include full details of the speaker including name, title, company, full mailing address, phone number and e-mail. In addition I also need to know how the subject of the panel is relevant to the speaker as there has to be a fit subject wise. Please don't send me an e-mail simply saying, "I want the spot". That will not suffice.

How To Monetize And Aggregate Niche Video Content

Over the next six weeks leading up to the Streaming Media East show in May I will be highlighting some of the speakers and sessions we have confirmed for the show. This year we have a lot of content producers, aggregators, new independent content studios and lots and lots of content demos.

One of the sessions I am personally interested in seeing is entitled "Monetizing And Aggregating Niche Video Content". The bottom line is that content creation is important but if the content is not promoted and does not generate revenue of some kind then this whole business model is broken. This session will show examples of ways to develop niche vertical sites without having to hire tons of new personnel and will discuss how to reach audiences on social networking sites like Facebook and others. Confirmed presenters are:

  • Moderator: Steve Safran, Senior VP, Media 2.0, Audience Research & Development, AR&D
  • Jim Louderback, CEO, Revision3
  • Alex Blum, CEO, KickApps
  • Herb Scannell, CEO, Co-Founder, Next New Networks

Six years since we took over the StreamingMedia.com business and we've still managed to keep the conference very affordable for everyone to attend. Registering before April 25th gets you a full two-day conference ticket for only $795.

Call For Speakers Now Open For Streaming Media West Show

Smwest_logo_5 The call for speakers for the Streaming Media West conference and exhibition taking place September 23-25 in San Jose is now open. Since the West show is earlier this year than last year, the call for speakers will only be open for the next 5 weeks. For the East show, we got over 800 submissions, which is 8x the number we have room for. I cannot stress enough how important it is that you get a submission in during the deadline if you wanted to be considered as a speaker. All the details of how to submit are here.

Also, I am actively looking for moderators and session organizers for the West show. I had some really great help from folks for the upcoming East show and are looking for the same help again. If interested please send me a session outline that includes the name of the session, a detailed 5-6 sentence description of what the session will cover and a list of potential company names that you think can speak to the topic. I am particularly interested in session topics that show real-world video in action with non-vendor demos.

List Of Online Video Conferences, Tradeshows and Events

In the past year or two, many new summits, conferences and events have sprung up to talk about online video or some specific facet of online video like video advertising, video search etc... and I am asked all the time by people for a list of shows.

With that in mind, here is a list of many events that have an online video focus to them of some kind. I did not list events like NAB, CES, IBC etc... as those shows are not focused on online video specifically and I didn't list shows that only talk to terrestrial video with no online component. Also, I did not list any event that has a website that has no info on it or an event that is over a year old and I only listed events in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Many of the links go to 2007 show websites as some have not yet announced 2008 dates.

This list is far from finished. Please add events you think are missing in the comments section and I will continue to keep the list updated.

If I forgot your event, it wasn't personal, just too many to keep track of, hence the need for a list. Please add it to the comments section.

Looking To Hire Conference Chair For The Streaming Media Europe Show

Smeurope_logo_2 StreamingMedia.com is looking to hire someone who is interested in being the conference chair for the Streaming Media Europe show taking place October 15-17th in London. With all of the other shows I am working on in the U.S. and the growth of our business overall, I won't be able to chair the European show this year.

We are looking for a part-time person who is willing to work with me on the program but will primarily take the lead in organizing the session topics, selecting speakers and being the conference chair on-site during the three days of the show. You must be located in or near the UK and must have experience in planning conferences and/or have a good working knowledge of the online video industry.

This is part-time work that can be done over many months and other than a few specific deadlines, is the kind of work someone who is organized could accomplish quickly. This is also a tremendous opportunity for the right person who wants to have a real impact on the European online video market and wants to use this event to help establish themselves as a thought leader in the industry. You get to decide how the industry is educated and brand yourself as someone who is tied directly into the space.

If you are interested, please contact me ASAP with your resume and an outline of your experience in the industry as it pertains to conference planning. We will be scheduling some in-person meetings next month in London to talk to those who may be interested.

Conference Session Preview: Streaming Media East Show Agenda

Smeast_logo_3 I've been a little slow in blogging as of late as I'm hard at work on finalizing the advance program for the Streaming Media East show taking place in May. We will have 36 sessions at the show and the first third are now confirmed with moderators.

This year I have decided to use the blog to post the conference agenda before the advance program is even printed so everyone can see the kinds of topics and subjects that are going to be discussed and the kind of demos that will be shown. Please keep in mind, this is just the first 1/3 of the program, there is a lot more to come.

If you see a session in particular you are interested in possibly speaking on you can send in a speaking request, but since the deadline passed more than two weeks ago, those who sent in speaking requests on time get first priority.

Effective Business Models For Short-form Video Marketing
Some advertisers see user-generated video sites as a free way to distribute their message, however this has rapidly evolved into a significant paid business, where sites charge based on video placement and search keywords. Learn the relative ROI of going to a major site (i.e. YouTube) vs. a smaller site (i.e. Metacafe) vs. a plethora of tiny sites. Learn what methods are successful for getting viewers and the importance of content vs. placement. This panel will discuss and show video examples of effective business models for both advertisers and publishers.

LifeCasting: How Fast and How Real Can We Get?
How did lifecasting videos get so hot? In the early days of television, live was the second choice, because of potential pitfalls, cost of production and a host of other problems. And yet, in the world of Internet video, lifecasting - using Internet video to share moments of our lives or to broadcast events and happenings - is the new hot thing. With platforms like Kyte.tv, Zannel, Mogulus, Stickcam and many others now available on the market, lots of new options and opportunities exist. Come see some of the hot and upcoming mobile lifecasting options in action and discuss is lifecasting will be become just a fad or the next big thing.

Best Practices in Enterprise Streaming for Communications and Learning
Use of online video in the enterprise has evolved well beyond the special occasion of rudimentary talking head videos that characterized early adoption. Today, innovative organizations take a holistic view of all their online communications, seeking to extract as much value as possible from any infrastructure that involves video. Whether webcasting executive briefings across the globe, or capturing and archiving rich media presentations for training, marketing, sales, and compliance, a growing number of organizations are capitalizing on the ability of Web 2.0 technologies. This session will show firsthand examples from Fortune 500 organizations of best practices in integrated online video for communications and learning.

CDN Pricing: The Going Rate For Video Delivery
With more CDN players in the market than ever before, trying to figure out what you should pay for delivering video can still be quite complex. This presentation will offer real pricing numbers from large, globally focused content delivery networks and show you the average going rate when you outsource delivery to a third party. The session will also cover some of the variables that determine the final price, how you should accurately compare the delivery services of one CDN to another and gives you a list of providers in the market today.

Monetizing And Aggregating Niche Video Content

This panel will discuss the new ways content owners and site developers are aggregating content and distributing it on the 2.0 web. We will give examples of ways to develop niche vertical sites without having to hire tons of new personnel and discuss how to reach audiences on social networking sites like Facebook. Learn about some of the new emerging platforms for niche video distribution and learn best practices of ways to increase your changes of making money with your content.

Focus Group: Young People's Attitudes Towards Online Video
This special session, a panel of high school and college students will discuss their online video consumption habits. Learn what types of online video content they like, what sites they get their content from, the devices they are playing it back on and how they interact with video advertising. Find out what their perspective is on pay media, portable content and what they think the future holds for the next generation of viewers on the web. Bring your own questions for a lively Q&A session with the students at the end of the session.

Live Broadcasting Over Mobile And WiFi Networks

While big media tests the waters of mobile broadcasting, many web video producers are already out there doing it live from the street, with a cell phone. Others are joining in and experimenting with two-way broadcasts via streaming video over cellphone networks and via WiFi, wherever they are. Viewers can chat while the broadcast is going on and affect and sometimes even direct the coverage of the content being produced. Come to this session to hear Steve Garfield talk with other pioneers in the live broadcasting space about their experiences on the forefront of this new technology for sharing their stories over the web.

The H.264 Convergence
Over the past year, more and more streaming media players are utilizing H.264 and providing support for the technology. Adobe's recent support for H.264 in their Flash player has sparked industry discussions amongst major broadcasters and online video producers about the role H.264 will play. This session will explain why H.264 is getting so much exposure, what recent announcements have put it into the spotlight and whether it can really be the one codec that the industry can all converge on. Attendees will also see real-world examples of sites and services that are utilizing H.264 today.

User-Generated Video in Education
The online video revolution has been embraced by students, teachers, instructors and researchers, many of whom are producing video for class assignments, teaching purposes and other uses. Learn what kind of content is being produced, where is it being posted and how user-generated content fits into the overall strategy of educational institutions. This panel of experienced educational media professionals will discuss the many ways your school, college or university can maximize the value of your user-generated video, and how you can assist faculty and students in making it better.

How Old Media Is Embracing Online Video and New Media
Led by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, this session will discuss how converging media technologies are redefining traditional distribution methods; how interactive and on-demand services are changing and how entertainment and news video is being consumed. Come hear from some of the leading publishers, broadcasters and advertisers about the impact that video and new media is having upon their business models.

Codec Comparison: VP6, H.264 and Windows Media
Choosing the right codec involves lots of factors, including quality, player install base, costs, and server related features. This session will compare the video quality of the big three codecs; VP6, H.264 and Windows Media. It will also include a comparison of the primary H.264 codecs including Apple, Sorenson, Main Concept and Dicas. The session will present attendees with the latest published penetration figures for the H.264 compatible Flash 9 player and Microsoft's Silverlight player and provide usage statistics among major broadcasters and corporations. Attendees will also learn how to compare relevant server and player related features, and costs associated with adapting and using each platform.

Delivering Media For Microsoft Silverlight With Windows Server 2008
This session will cover how to take advantage of the new Silverlight media serving features in Windows Server 2008. Attendees will learn about the new capabilities of IIS7 Media Pack including bit-rate throttling and playlist options for progressive download content. The session will also demonstrate the enhanced capabilities in Windows Media Services 2008, including scalability doubling and appliance-like cache/proxy deployment for edge networks specific to streaming.

Looking To Hire Co-Chair For Streaming Media East and West Conferences

Over the past few years, the Streaming Media East and West shows have been growing nicely for us on all fronts and in particular the conference side of the business. We now produce three major shows each year in NY, CA and London. Combined, these shows average over 300 speakers and 75+ sessions that I have to develop programming for.

I am looking to hire someone who is interested in helping me plan and shape the conference agenda for the NY and CA shows and be a co-chair of the show. This is a highly visibility position which will put you in front of a lot of industry people, get you major exposure and give you first-hand experience in what it takes to produce a major conference. You will also have an opportunity to help educate and shape the industry based on the agenda you help develop.

The work involves helping to plan and write session topics, organize and outline the major subjects that need to be covered, invite and confirm speakers, work with moderators and helping with online marketing and promotion. It's the type of job ideal for someone who wants more exposure in the industry, has industry contacts, knows what the hot topics are and is not afraid of speaking in front of an audience. I am looking for someone who loves this industry as much as I do and takes pride in wanting to help educate and grow the industry for everyone's benefit.

This is a part-time opportunity and can be done remotely. The majority of the work is done within a month's time frame and then there is a lot of follow up work for a few months until the show. It's mostly lots of e-mails and some phone calls.

If you are interested, please reach out to me and let me know in detail what your expertise is. Please keep in mind, this is the type of job that you have to love to do in order to program a really great conference. You don't need to eat, sleep and breathe online video as much as I do, but you really have to be into it or else it shows in the program.

I am constantly asked by people how I got my name out there, how I branded myself and what it took to get involved in so many facets of the online video industry. This is a great opportunity for the right person to start to brand themselves if you are organized, write well, have the pulse of the industry and are good at doing smart marketing and promotion. If that is you, please contact me.

H.264 Makes It's Move: Moderate This Session At Streaming Media East

I've got another moderator spot open for someone who wants to organize a session at Streaming Media East around H.264 and talk to the major announcements that took place in the past year and what will become of H.264 next year. This session is probably more geared towards a technical discussion but should also cover content trends and usage adoption taking place in the market. H.264 is a hot topic and is only going to get hotter next year.

Ideally, the moderator is not from a vendor company or someone who is selling a product or service involved with H.264 of any kind or can convince me you don't have a conflict of interest. Again, bloggers and others who write and cover this topic for the industry are ideal. Send me an e-mail if interested.

Who Wants To Moderate A Session About Lifecasting: Kyte.tv, Justin.tv, Zannel and Seesmic?

I'm looking for an individual who covers the lifecasting segment of the industry and has been keeping a close eye on companies like Kyte.tv, Justin.tv, Zannel and Seesmic. I plan to have a session about this topic at the next Streaming Media East show in May in NYC and am looking for a moderator who wants to organize and lead this session.

The ideal candidate would be someone who is writing about these companies in the market, has a blog of their own, or has experience in what is required as a moderator to produce a quality session. If you're interested, please send me an e-mail along with a brief description of why this is a fit for you.

I Need Help: Get Paid To Help Program Sessions At Streaming Media East 2008

As the Streaming Media East and West shows continue to grow each year, it is getting harder and harder for me to program over 110 speakers and nearly 40 sessions per show all by myself. This year, I am looking to hire 2-3 people who are experts in a particular vertical of this industry who would like to help AND have the expertise that is needed to organize a topic with a few speakers/presenters.

I'm looking for individuals who are experts in a particular facet of the industry like advertising, content creation, video work-flow, content monetization etc... or are experts in a particular vertical of the market like media, broadcast, enterprise, entertainment etc.... and are willing to create 2-3 session topics around a particular subject or vertical. You would have the ability to create the session topics, discussion focus, decide on the format and organize and select all of the speakers along with my input.

You would not have to moderate the 2-3 sessions but could if you wanted to. You would have a lot of free reign to really design the entire session and this would be your chance to really help shape the discussions around a topic of interest to you. We'll promote you as the person who organized the sessions and pay you well for your time.

The ideal candidates would be those who are well versed in how to organize a discussion or presentation subject and know who the most engaging speakers and companies are that should be represented. This spot is ideal for bloggers who cover a particular topic in this space. Think of it as a way to organize your own mini-show inside of the bigger show and have the ability and responsibility to be a thought leader around a subject that is important to you.

Also, if you don't want to take on as much work, but would like to possibly organize just one session, I am open to that as well and you should contact me ASAP. The advance program is due in nearly 4-5 weeks and I need to confirm the session topics. QUALITY moderators are desperately needed. It is still hard to find those who know the role of a moderator, present well, frame the topic of the session properly, keep the discussion on point and keep others on the panel engaging.

Bottom line, I need help. The East 08 show will mark the 12th show I am having to program and I think  input from others in the industry is needed to really help shape the show and the industry moving forward. This is YOUR show, I am open to ideas and suggestions and thank anyone who is willing to help.

Keynote Speakers Wanted For Streaming Media East 2008

Smeast_logo_5 As I begin to think about the programming for the Streaming Media East 08 show in May, I'm trying to collect as much feedback as possible on who you think should keynote the show. What company would you find interesting to hear from or what speaker is engaging and has something compelling to show and tell?

The East show will have four keynotes this year and all of them will be from end users. I'm thinking I'd like to have a good mix of speakers representing an agency, (advertising), a major TV broadcaster (content monetization), a portal like Amazon or eBay (commerce) and a Fortune 500 corporation (enterprise). But I am also open to other ideas.

While I have many contacts and will be reaching out to various companies, I am open to ideas and suggestions of someone you know, a customer of yours or a company you may represent. Please send me an e-mail with any suggestions. If they end up working out and become a keynote speaker I will make sure to take care of you or your company in the way of payment or other compensation.

I have to lock down all four of the keynote speakers by mid January so I don't have as much time as some may think. Please contact me if you think you have someone good in mind. Thank you.

Speakers Wanted: Streaming Media East 2008 In NYC

Smeast_logo_4 The next StreamingMedia.com conference and exhibition will be Streaming Media East, May 19-21st, 2008 at the Hilton Hotel in NYC. I have just opened up the call for speakers and all submissions should be sent in via the form on our website. If you are interested in speaking, or are interested in submitting for a company you represent, I can't stress enough how important it is that you get the submission in on time. The deadline is January 1st 2008.

Many don't realize how much work goes into planning a show months in advance. Last year I got some really great speaking submissions a few weeks before the show after the program was already complete. The East show has over 100 speakers and 35 session slots, it's not something you can just program a few weeks in advance. So if you want to speak, please get the submission in by January 1st.

If you have any questions about a submission, ideas you want to run by me, thoughts on what you can do to help the show, call me at anytime. 917-523-4562. I pick up my phone 24 hours a day 7 days a week. I am always reachable. Don't let the fact you may have a question stop you from getting your submission in on time. If you have any questions at all on the submission process, contact me so you can get it in on time.
