Free Giveaway: Win A New Apple TV

IMG_0065 The contest is now closed. Earlier today I reviewed the new Apple TV player in a head-to-head comparison with Roku's new XDS model. As a result, I have one extra Apple TV unit to give away to a lucky reader of my blog. To enter the drawing, all you have to do is leave one comment on this post and make sure you submit the comment with a valid email address. The drawing is open to anyone with a mailing address in the U.S. or Canada and the winner will be selected at random on October 18th. I'm also giving away a Roku XDS unit and you can enter that drawing here. Congrats to Gina Sepowski who won the Apple TV.

  • Lehman

I’ll take one! Keep up the great reporting, Dan.

  • Brian Smith

    Apple TV. I approve.

  • Charlie Strauzer

Nice work Dan, when is Apple going to make a DVR to compete with Tivo? or better yet, when will they wise up and buy Tivo? LOL

  • My 11 year old daughter just said to me at breakfast: “Did you know there is an Apple TV?”
The power of marketing.. Would love to be able to show her what it is first hand!

  • Paul

    But will they add apps?

  • David

Would love to have one as a student!

  • Waiting for Apple to move this to more open model a la iphone….

  • Mahesh

This is simply amazing! Would love to have one.

  • I guess we’ll never get into the mind of Steve Jobs – so might not even be worth it to try – but why no 1080p support? Why no second HDMI output – or outputs for 720p?
What I really don’t understand is why the content owners don’t all just sign up for TV Everywhere – and then you would not have to deal with all the questions about whether or not a network was represented.
Allow the consumer to buy the package form the satellite or cable company – and then authenticate on the device of your choosing. If not authenticated – let the consumer pay for a subscription ala carte. $0.99 rentals become reasonable then.

  • John Bosler

Really enjoyed your article. Any plans to incorporate a review of Google TV as well?

  • Dave

As an Apple shareholder I’ve gotta go with them despite the shortcomings.

  • Alex Calic

Interested to play with the next phase of the converging video landscape!

  • Pablo A

    Thanks, Dan.

  • Niranjan

    I want! I want! I want!

  • Brian

    Thanks for the post!

  • JOhn

    Thanks good review

  • Owen

Indeed, an Apple TV ap store would be very interesting, especially with iPhone/iPad remote control integration. Despite the sexy UX, this product still seems quite far off from replacing cable/satellite.

  • Brian

Loves me some Apple products too!

  • Dan

I should never have bought my Apple TV 1.5 years ago. I was able to get Boxee, Pandora, etc. to stream via a work around, but any software update would erase the illegal installations. Now I have a $400 block of platic sitting at my house while Apple TV is now a quarter of the price.

  • Raj

Does the Roku device have youtube capabilities?

  • JP

    I’m up for one!

  • John

Looking forward to the November iOS update…

  • Jenny

Thanks for such a thorough review.

  • Guillaume Courouge

Can’t wait to try the new apple TV with Netflix!
    Thanks for the review!

  • Jacob

You are awesome about giving stuff away.
    Thank you again.

  • I like free stuff

  • Chad

    Thanks for the opportunity!

  • karen

I like the idea of connecting to my music which apple tv has.

  • Bill

Hope the Apple TV is everything it’s cracked up to be.

  • Chris

    Nice review!

  • Glenn

Thanks for your focus on this industry Dan. I’d love an Apple TV thank you very much!

  • Jenna

    Great review, and very helpful.

  • GD Singh

  • Andrew

I have a ROKU XDS on order thanks to your article and would love an Apple TV to compare. Thanks for your advice and I put my money where you suggested.

  • Mark

    Thanks for the review!
One thing that I would want to use an AppleTV for is to access home movies I’ve recorded myself and stored on my iMac, so I can watch them without having to burn DVDs. Does Roku have features to access content from a home computer?

  • Stasi

Super! I’d love to try this out.

  • Alan O

I have faith in Apple’s ability to capitalize on their already established products and eventually bring Apple TV into full cross-platform functionality which will give it quite an advantage.

  • Melody

I’d be happy to have either – got to get rid of the expensive cable – but I do have Apple products, so there is some advantage for me to getting the Apple TV. I appreciate you posting your reviews – if I have to pay for it, I’ll probably buy the Roku.

  • Lindley Rouse

I’d love to give Apple TV a spin. Airplay is its most interesting feature. But to be honest I agree with your assessment.

  • SP

    Thank you very much.

  • Nick

It would be sweet if Apple TV allowed Hulu+

  • Peter Lee

Yet, another reason to get fatter bandwidth!

  • Daniel Huynh

Thank you Dan for good review. I have not yet own any media player for TV yet.

  • ryan

apparently i should buy a roku over an apple tv, but that doesn’t apply if it’s free, right?

  • Bill

Can I use this with a NAS device (with itunes library on it) so i dont have to have a computer on line to stream from?

  • Jason

    Apple TV rocks!

  • Lee Wilmeth

Winning this would simplify the modding process.

  • Gabriel

    Very nice review!
I support the idea posted by John Bosler. A review of Google TV would be very interesting too.
    Keep up the good work!

  • David H Ramirez

Great Review!! Can I try my hand at both?..

  • Mark

Enjoyed the review… but I guess I should want to win the Roku. Or maybe both so that I too may do a little side by side 🙂

  • Matt

Can’t wait for the update with apps!

  • Marek

Great review, it would be even better if I win Roku !! 🙂

  • Dennis

GREAT review! I would love to get my hands on the new ATV device. Currently a Boxee fan. 🙂

  • Tim

The iOS update will be interesting!! Love the giveaways, too!! : )

  • Nanker Phelge

Mr. Jobs never wants to be the “first” in any market and almost dared Roku and others to get started with his prior hobby. TV is tricky and Apple knows iTV can’t be complicated to appeal to the masses…
Buy the Roku. Next year you’ll be storing it with your Rio MP3 Player, Palm Treo, and Tablet PC. I’ll buy the the Apple TV and get the free software upgrade.
Oh and remote battery a concern? We already own millions of remotes with iTouch, iphone, ipad… I guess I’m a fanbois.
    Thanks for the article

  • I am a novice to the CDN Industry, but thanks to your blog – learning so much and will continue reading 🙂 I’d love an Apple TV thank you!

  • Leif

    Is it my lucky day?

  • Jeff

Thanks for the update, and it’s nice of you to offer this giveaway!
I’m close to cutting ties with Dish Network in response to these new options. And Comcast is an option I refuse to consider. I hope the content providers keep jumping on board because, over the next year or 2, I suspect this will be the best way to go.

  • Archie

  • Always interested in taking a look at new Apple products… and, even with its shortcomings, this looks like a winner. I feel like Apple’s products like this always flounder at first… then as content (and apps) become available, they start to soar. With or without jailbreaking, I expected that to be the case here, and I hope I get to find out first-hand thanks to you!

  • Jon Beattie

Great review. I’m thinking a apple tv and a roku box are both in my future as I’m cutting the cord. Goodbye cable.

  • flo

I’d like to enter… But more importantly, what is the best device to incorporate streaming local media?

  • Eric Harvey

Thanks for the article, Dan. After I win both devices, I’ll be sure and let you know how my own head-to-head testing goes.

  • TJ Kudalis

I clearly need to run a head-to-head comparison with my Roku. Thanks, Dan!

  • Mark

    Excellent review and very helpful.
I do not feel the 1080p is a big issue (unless your TV is over 42 in.) nor is the composite support a big issue. If you need composite, well, you really need to get on your horse and ride over to the general store and get a new TV.

  • What about streaming content from my computer?

  • Amber

Good review! I would love to win an Apple TV.

  • Hubert

Shortcomings yes, but it does look so much cooler.

  • Chapps

I’ve already got one coming to me next week, but would LOVE to have one for my second TV. Great article – and fantastic to see good solid products compete in this space.

  • Piet

I have wanted to go with Apple TV for some time but with Roku and the coming of GoogleTV I am not so sure now.. but perhaps winning one will make me a believer!

  • Jason

Keep up the great work and I would take an Apple TV anyday.

  • Steve

I thought Apple’s site was also showing flickr access, but don’t see it listed now. Thanks for the great comparison review. Thanks for the free Apple TV offer.

  • Karen

Would love to get my hands on another ATV.

  • James

A great review, Dan. I am ready to receive my new device.

  • Jonathan M

Absolutely fascinated by all this web TV stuff that’s hurling itself out of the door right now. Heck, you said you wanted comments, not necessarily intelligent comments.

  • Chris P

  • Michael

I’ll take it off your hands!

  • Padgett Hill

Great review. I will take on of each.

  • David ferrandino

I would love to win an apple tv for the children for those rentals and great compare review

  • James F

Hey, that was an awesome review of the AppleTV vs Roku. You really gave me a lot to think about, so it’s going to be a lot harder to pick which I want for xmas.

  • Torsten Steinweg

Great review. Still would prefer the AppleTV 🙂

  • J Ontiveros

Great write up. Would love to win an AppleTV.

  • Dave

    Mmm. Apple.

  • MIC4311

Apple tv looks pretty per usual. Falls short. Per usual….

  • Gigi Sayfan

    I want one :-). Thanks.

  • Oooh, I want one.

  • Santi

Despite the fact that Roku declared the winner, I’ll take a free ATV any day…

  • JP

    Thanks for the review.

  • drr

I will say the apple TV looks better.

  • ajgiampa

    Apple products are great….

  • S.A.

Who can say no to an Apple TV ? Not me.

  • John

Would love to make my own comparison!

  • Eric

Solid review! I am now sold on the RoKu…Thanks!

  • Cool! Would love the new apple tv!

  • Attila

Someday everything will be “i” something. Hope to get my jump on the future with an iTV.

  • I love the Roku, but I’d like to give the AppleTV a shot, especially for free.

  • michael burshteyn

good review. i have a roku but i want to try it side by side with apple tv.

  • I have a roku and love it. I bought it as a netflix only device and it just keeps getting better and better. I would love to get my hands on an apple tv just to compare them. I’ll keep the one I like better and pass the other to another lucky media wonk.

    A great blog, good job.

  • Enjoy the site. And would love an AppleTV!

  • Oscar

Thanks for the review, really helpful in setting my expectations !

  • Masa

I can’t wait to see Apps on it!

  • Singleton

I’d be more than happy to take that off your hands Dan.

  • Les

Nice head to head review. Thanks!

  • Ben

Thanks for the great comparison. You’ll have to add in Google TV in a few days.

  • John Rath

Christmas comes early! Apple TV is on my list.
Nice write-up on Apple vs. Roku – and as always, love the blog.

  • I played around with the Apple TV yesterday at the Apple store and I LOVED IT!!! The user interface and simplicity of use was awesome.

  • malebolgia

    Great review.

  • KH

I’ve been so wanting the new apple tv:) Thx for the review

  • MPS-Tampa

Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  • Wow! An Apple TV would be a great win. Thank you for your generous giveaway!

  • Ed chi

Thanks for the review. Wondering if I should get one.

  • Jim Johnson

I was excited to see the price drop of the Apple TV. I have an iPod Touch and iPad which is supposed to interface and control the Apple TV. I wish they had a hard drive or storage to download like a Tivo too. I also read that the Apple TV is basically an iPod Touch in hardware anyhow. Sounds cool if I could get my hands on one!

  • Ryan

Yes! I would love one, though I think I’d like the Roku XDS even more!

  • Pat

    Thanks for the helpful review!

  • Dale

Very well done review. Several years ago I started trying to figure out how to make video more accessible. I have Tivo, Apple TV (v1.5…160GB) and both Macs and PCs. It is really great to have choices now with many more options coming. Now the challenge is determining the best option for each person.
I use my AppleTV to stream video from four computers and it works well. I have not tested the new one, but hopefully the new A4 processor will fix the sluggish nature when accessing large libraries of videos.
I use a TivoHD connected to a non HD TV as it is the only one that supports the cable card now that Comcast only offers digital options. Recorded shows are then downloaded, encoded into H.264 and made available via AppleTV, PC’s, Macs, iPhones, iPads in home and externally. Great but the Apple TV cannot connect without an HDMI.
Tried the Samsung blu-ray players to connect to Hulu, but only the high end 3D unit offers Hulu even though the lower end units provide internet video (buyer beware). Look forward to the possibility of testing both the new Apple TV and the Roku. I will keep my fingers crossed for one of them.
Great review and thanks for providing good data points on the options.

  • Well, I’ll play the sympathy card…because I sort of can right now. I’ve been out of work 5 weeks and looking at another 2-4 months due to a debilitating back injury. I can’t stand or sit for more than 2-4 minutes. This means that I can no longer sit at my desk and use my iMac. So, so between my iPhone, a new iPad (that I had to buy this week just to make typing manageable) a new (and FREE) Apple TV would really help to connect to my desktop content. Also, I haven’t had a date with my wife in weeks because I can’t really go anywhere. So, tonight, she asked me if we could look into a Netflix account to watch in-home movies.. I’m a Mac guy, so the new Apple TV seemed like a perfect fit. So, thanks for considering. Also, I’d be happy to do a review of the Apple TV and post it on my review site and be sure to mention you and your great website! All the best!

  • count me in

  • Patrick Dutcher

I only wish the Roku was this small =(

  • AJ

    Good comparison. I’ll take one!

  • Great review. I have the Roku box. Your comment regarding aesthetics was very interesting. The ipod has less technical features and put weird limits on me say compared to mp3 players available 10 years ago, but I still buy them up.

  • Kenneth Simon

good review. I would like one

  • Derrick

    Thanks for entering me 🙂

  • Ben

This is a very interesting market area right now, but likely will look very different one year from now as features and players shake out.

  • Hugo Lopez

    Thanks for the comparison!

  • Joan

    I’d love one. Thanks!

  • Chris

    Sounds neat.

  • Joshua

Good article on the roku v/s apple tv. It is a debate going through my family and friends now.

  • Iwanit

    Please please please!

  • Great review. Thanks, Dan!

  • Karen Flecknoe

Sounds like Apple released before fully developed thier products abilities. Apple products usually are very dependable, I wonder how the life spam of Roku will stack up.

  • It’s not perfect, but I’d be happy to take it off your hands. Though, I’d need to upgrade my TV before I could use it:-(

  • Dave B

Great article. Looking forward to your inevitable Boxee Box vs Google TV article (or some variation of) in the future.

  • Rob Blatt

I wonder if you’d consider taking an informal poll via blog comments to see what the readers want more.

  • NJ

    I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

  • Jamil

    I’m in for this too!

  • Gopal Kamat

Hi! Please add me to the Apple TV giveaway. I personally, am looking forward to Logitech’s Revue (Google TV) device and others coming out next year…

  • Jeff Campbell

    Thank you for the reviews

  • Another great give away Dan, I know one of these times I will be lucky enough to win the prize! Would love to play around with an Apple TV and scare my cable company some more!

  • Chad Funk

    Gimme gimme.

  • Mike Bass

    Good review. Thanks!

  • Dave

My original Apple TV needs a little friend …

  • Sounds Good. I’m trying to dump cable. It just keeps going up in price and no new channels or features are being added.

  • Nice review.

  • Thanks for a great contest!

  • Deepak

I’ll think of using the Apple TV only if I get it for free.

  • Stephen

I’ve been trying to decide between these two options and like the perspective you bring.

  • Brian

Thanks for the great review. I was leaning toward an Apple TV but this puts things in a different perspective.

  • Dave Black

Dan great job on the review. The Apple TV looks awsome, but it’s just the tip of the rush of products to get your eyes. Broadcasters are freaking out over these devices!

  • Reza Sadjadpour

  • Bob

    No whammies!

  • Dan

I think this would look great in my entertainment center 🙂

  • Britney

I found your Roku/Apple article very interesting. Looking forward to seeing what the next competitor brings to the table.

  • Marc

    Thanks for the great review!

  • I think Apple should embed this device in a 42″ OLED TV – then send it to me for a long-term test drive.

  • On second thought….after reading your review I think I will hold off on buying one of these – until they support 1080p. But if you’re givin’ one away, well, that’s a different story!

  • Mark

Hopefully Apple has some hidden gems in the apple TV that will make it more releveant. Mays still be worth a try since I have the iphone and ipad.

  • Joe

Appreciate the review. I have you beat by one IPod. Thanks again for sharing….

  • Regular Guy

Hoping to win the Apple TV! Appreciate the review. Thank you!

  • Donald

    Great review…hope I win!

  • Larry

    Nice review!

  • Doug S

    Enjoyed the post

  • CT

    Thanks for the review.

  • Ed Park

  • Jay Hollenkamp

Is there any reason to suspect the AppleTV software will eventually be available for a Roku owner via nefarious individuals? Is that software as tough to add to a non-mac machine as, say, the mac os?

  • Rory

Can’t wait to get one of these. AirPlay is the secret weapon that’s going to make this way better than Roku, et al.

  • Sid Lee

I’ll be glad to take it off your hands!

  • Lukas Fauset

I’m actually really torn. I’m in the small minority that likes the iTunes ecosystem.

  • Rotll

Sounds like Apple is banking on its name more than its features! Thanks for the review!

  • TLMcC

As a proud owner of a first gen Apple TV, I am anxious to see how I can enjoy this new device without on-board storage.

  • Chris

I really hope they add USB playback support… seems like a no brainer.

  • I’m still leaning towards Roku, but I’ll happily take a free Apple TV and do my own head-to-head 🙂

  • cutthecable

Would love to test my own Apple TV. Thanks for the reports.

  • Michael

    Thanks again!

  • Great article on the comparison between Apple TV and the Roku… hope I win the give-away.

  • DY

    Good review.

  • brstrick

Nice job on the review, I don’t own an Apple tv but I do have the older Roku and I love it!

  • kishore

agree with your review. jobs is still treating apple tv like a hobby than a real product..

  • Kevin

Good reviews of the AppleTV and Roku. Thanks.

  • Rick

As always, Apple ahead of the curve. Whether you like them or hate them, you have to admire them.

  • Gary H

I have a Roku; I bought it over the AppleTV and am very glad I did. Not that I wouldn’t mind a free AppleTV though…

  • Tom

Great review comparing the Apple TV vs Roku. Would love to win either one! Thanks.

  • Andre

    Great write up!

  • Dave

I think Apple TV will really blossom when they enable apps…and that 8GB flash, and extra flash slot on the board right next to it sure look poised to do just that.

  • Kishor

  • Raj

thanks, I would like to win an Apple TV! 🙂

  • Mike L

Thanks for the review; normally I’m very Apple-biased since their products feature well-integrated hardware and software but it sounds like they have some way to go right now on both fronts.

  • Michael offered me $72.60 for my Roku XR earlier this month. I might be using that $ to get the Apple TV (will have to wait for the Google TV presentation first, though).

  • unami

Good review – I thought it was even-handed and adequately compared both devices.

  • Eli

I enjoyed your article and the comparison of Apple TV and Roku. I would go for the Apple TV!!!

  • Dale

First, let me state that I own an older, original Apple TV and by design it is “bound” to iTunes (and thus the iTune Store).
I’ve tried to get it out of it’s “one-mindedness” a couple of times, using “atvusb” to add Boxee, and such, in an effort to “Free Willy” and view streaming content from NetFlix and such.
It seems that I always receive an Apple TV update shortly after I “free the box,” so have quit trying (especially when my research showed that the original Apple TV is grossly under-powered to stream NetFlix and forget about content.
Besides, when there are 1080 set-top-boxes out there, why pursue 780 (apple TV resolution out) – I mean my TV upscales to 1080, but still…..
I had about settled on the WD box, but after the latest release of Roku XDS and it’s love for streaming non-iTune store content – I could sure enjoy the change.
Now this doesn’t mean that I’ll throw away my Apple TV… No, no, but these days, you almost need an Apple TV AND another streaming/hard disk based set-top-box to take advantage of all the media out on different content servers. The Apple iTunes store has a vast array of content available so I really don’t mind more than one set-up-box (even though they actually sit on the entertainment console (good name, I suppose), just under my Sony 46 inch (Bravia)).
Face it, there will never be a “one-size-fits-all” media set-top-box (or TV with everything, either) – it doesn’t pay, from a marketing stand point, to “help” the consumer with an “Uber-Box.”
I recommend that the consumer just starting out or looking to update their technology, buy an Apple TV AND a Roku XDS. We’re not talking about a lot of money here. Plus, along with cable or satellite service, that should avail your household with more than enough selections of diversion through your television machine…

  • atul

    all terrain video.
    iOS instant on is killer…

  • steve

would love to get my hands on this!!! 🙂

  • Aaron

An AppleTV, too? Sweet. Thank you. Now I have to decide which one I would like more … or maybe I will just enter both contests.

  • MK

    Thanks for the review.

  • John B

Great head to head review of the Apple TV vs Roku

  • GFB

Does the AppleTV stream music using the same app as the Mac mini? Looking primarily for a streaming box for music…video is secondary.

  • steve

I’m waiting for the addition of apps!

  • Michael Fiumano

    yes, YES!!!

  • Jonathan Smith

Apple always make a satisfying product. This bad boy might now be able to do everything that the upcoming boxee will, but I’m sure it will we fans over with the legendary Apple ease of use.

  • Ashley K

    Great giveaway 🙂

  • Teter09

    A Free Apple TV?
    Yes Please!

  • Matt

Guess I could do with a free one

  • Adam Brake

    Great article, thanks!

  • Eric Klein

This is cool. Thanks for the comparison

  • JohnF

    Great review Dan, Thanks!

  • Justin

The new one definitely looks like a solid improvement over the old one…hopefully it’ll turn into more than Apple’s “hobby”!

  • Josh

    I’ll try one out!

  • Brett Day

would love to see what the apple tv is all about!

  • Jon C

I don’t have one of these. This would be one way to get it.

  • Brian

Thanks for the review. I’ve been happy with the Roku and even more excited to see that Hulu+ is coming soon. Would like to see HBO to Go for Roku.

  • Austin

I like my Roku, but I’m curious about giving the Apple TV a try.

  • Steve

Not sure how I feel about the rent-only model…

  • Jared

I’d like to give it whirl… interested to see how the airplay works with video…

  • Matt

    Love to have it

  • Norman

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Drew

    Thanks! Well done!

  • Trevor

Would like to enter the contest. Thanks for the comparison.

  • Ben

    Good review!

  • smmccarron

I I have a Roku XR and a 2nd gen Apple TV. I love each of them for different reasons. I hook my Roku up to any tv, and I can watch HD Netflix movies, but it’s lacking a good free channel to stream movies from my iTunes. Apple TV requires an HDMI port and will do my Netflix, but most importantly it streams movies from my iTunes. I used to connect my old iPhone to my tv via the composite cables in order to stream my movies via the Air Video app. They’re both cheap and are good for different things. If I could only choose to have one of them, I don’t know which one I’d choose, probably the Apple.

  • Elina

Apple TV just sells because of their name.

  • Roku is a fantastic winner in this head-to-head competition.
Raj: There is a YouTube channel on Roku, but you cannot search (yet), only see top lists.

  • Frank Guhlin

As the annoying Orange would say “Hey Apple!”
I am a geek when it comes to new things and love to try them out.
Need a new reviewer? I could use a box.

  • Al

I don’t like it but I’ll take one!

  • MJ

I’ve read a lot about Apple TV. But reading is not the same as experiencing.

  • Heather Kent

I bought the initial Apple TV and it sits on my shelf collecting dust. If I win this then I’ll gladly give it a try. 🙂 Thanks for the wonderful review!

  • Loved the review, I already own a ROKU, so now maybe an Apple TV as well!

I think Apple TV can be really good, but only once Apple loads it with iOS and allows third party apps to be installed via the APP store. I think it’s inevitable that this will happen and when it does it will open up streaming to a lot of interesting and exclusive content. Until then, my money in on the Roku device.

  • Micah

I loves me some free contests. Woo! Great reviews!

  • Thanks for this comparison review! It is extremely informative.

  • Pat

I love my Roku HD, but I certainly wouldn’t turn down an Apple TV.

  • Christopher

I don’t think Apple is going to give up on AppleTV, but it still doesn’t feel like they’ve gotten it right. I understand them trying to leverage iTunes for sale/rental, but as you noted in the post, the experience isn’t quite there yet. Maybe by version 3 they’ll work the kinks out, but it sounds like by then GoogleTV and Roku might have a leg up if they can use this opportunity to sprint ahead.

  • Matthew

I’d like to try Apple TV.

  • JB

Great review. I’m curious to see what these two boxes really mean for the future of television. A few years from now will we look back on these with the same opinions as we had for the previous generation Apple TV, or the defunct Prismiq? I’m also curious to read what you have to say about GoogleTV in the upcoming weeks.

  • Daz

I like my Roku but would love to try out the apple TV.

  • Rohit

Apple TV is cool and so is Roku – tough to call a clear winner !

  • C.L. Moses

Although I agree that ROKU is the hands down winner and would really like to win the XDS with 1080P support (currently own the HD), I also wouldn’t mind getting my hands on an Apple TV just to give it a try.

  • Larry

    Pick me! Pick me!

  • Vikash Harlalka

I would love to get one!

  • Matt

If it says Apple, I must have it!

  • Jeremy

Sorry if a repost – hope it doesn’t disqualify me…
Would love the new Apple TV

  • Dan

    Crossing my fingers…

  • Frank Stendal

This would definitely help in my quest to break free of cable.

  • David

I love my Roku. I’ve had it for 2 years. Would like to win the Apple TV to see if it measures up to my Roku!!

  • Whitney

Thanks Dan. Boggles the mind why they would build a device so blatantly (lack of 1080) behind the curve.

  • Suresh Kumar

Thanks for the comparison, as it helps prospective buyers like me.
Perhaps you can add some detail on Apple’s strategy for this product and future functionality, especially for customers who own other Apple products like iphone or ipad.

  • shome

    I’m in for any give-away.

  • Vic

My wife and kids are used to the convenience of the cable/satellite. I keep arguing for a better way to consume content, if I win this, hopefully it will be a much easier sell.

  • Z

Thanks for the head-to-head review. I haven’t been able to decide sight unseen which direction to go in my household but think we’ll be standardizing on one or the other (or both?).

  • BooRadley

I purchased the Apple TV. It’s a matter of time before the Apple TV hooks to the App store. Then this becomes a different story.

  • Hiten

  • Andy Tillman

I think Apple T.V. would make a great gift for my mother in law! 🙂

  • Steven

  • Ooo! Me!

  • Brett

Even for the loser in this comparison, I’ll gladly accept a free AppleTV.

  • Loved your article from yesterday.

  • K’Lynn

Oooh, which to get, Roku or Apple TV?? I better keep reading…

  • carole

Curiousity sitll peaked about this product. Apple hasn’t disappointed yet.

  • Great review. Thanks for the chance at a freebie.

  • Elise

    Thanks for the comparison!

  • Kaleb

Apple TV is awesome… I would love to win a free one!

  • Jimmy Markus

I would like the Roku but Apple would do also.

  • Very interested in the new Apple TV… but equally interested in seeing what the new GoogleTV boxes will be like.

  • Spiro

“Dan the Man” – you ROCK!! thanks for the review!

  • Dave

    Thanks for your thoughts!

  • Tim

Very helpful. Thanks. I still like the idea of Airplay.

  • Drew

    Yes please! Thanks!

  • Sarah Thomas

Oct. 18 is my birthday. This would certainly make a nice present.

  • winnex3

i have a roku and love it my family and i use it every day

  • Thomas V

    This is Great — Thanks

  • would love to have one!

  • brockway

    Interesting article

  • chris

I’m still on the fence about streaming TV vs the current model. Mind you, it’s not that I don’t this is the future, but rather I’m getting bogged down in the pleathra of technology that is swarming over the horizon. Apple may not have the best in class, but Steve Jobs understands how to make cultural shifts with technology. He may not be as cutting edge, but they still lead the pack in user experience compared to the major competitors.

  • Joe

Great review – thanks for that, and for the opportunity to win.

  • aaron

Getting rid of Comcast could use one of these.

  • Al

    Nice review. Thanks!

  • Gary

    Great report!

  • Clint

  • richtert

I’m still a little shocked that the Apple TV does not support 1080p. Makes little sense to me to invest in something that does not support it.
However, I see the long term winner of these devices to be the one that takes advantage of a developed app base and applies that to the tv. I think apple and google are the real contenders on this. So I plan to sit back and wait to see how this spins out over the next few months before diving in.

  • david

new stuff -what’s not to like

  • John Bickerson

My wife said we don’t need another electronic gadget. I said we should try to stay up with all the fancy technology. She said, “Baloney”. I said, it gives me gas.

  • Jeff

I’d like one – especially since my team is going to be providing programming for it!

  • JB

    Great Review!

  • Deirdre

I have Netflix account, so the idea of Apple TV is appealing.

  • ChrisK

Thanks, Dan – great review that tells me what to buy along with a GoogTV box… (unless I’m a lucky winner, that is!)

  • Steven Garcia

Apple TV will fit perfectly in my household of 4. We need our Itunes accessible in our living room! Thanks Dan, the blog proves we would like an Apple TV!

  • Steven Hittle

Great review. Do you think these devices will eventually replace cable companies?

  • Mark

    Hi Dan,
Good review, hopefully a lucky one for me also,

  • kirk

    Gimme gimme gimme…

  • kirk

i don’t mind winning an Apple TV.

  • Monty

Very cool. From my sources at Apple It sounds like future is still pretty unwritten for AppleTV. Apple hasn’t yet realized the use cases for bigscreen touch. Once they do, I’m sure we’ll see apps for TV and another new software ecosystem.

  • Tony

I hope to win! Great reviews here!

  • kirk

Head to head comparison is great. Great job!

  • Randy Angiel

Thanks for the raffle Dan – Can I register for the SONY/Google device next?

  • Sam Denton

I’m trying to convince my wife to cut the cable, and this is just in time for Xmas!

  • Malcolm4

The roku box has “apps” (kinda sorta) so I’m looking forward to someday hearing that apple TV does too!

  • Jeana Stevens

    Great research! Thanks! =o)

  • Josh

I would be happy to take it off your hands.

  • Ant

I like the thought of getting rid of my PPV and on demand services with my cable provider, but the real interest is in streaming my itunes library to my home theater system. The question is… will it cost more in the end?

  • Rn

    I like it.

  • libjack

Although I think it will be Roku first, I still want an Apple TV, cause it will benefit from my existing Mac base… so, might have to just get one of each…

  • kirk

    Apple TV you are mine

  • John

If the free content of programming and news is limited on these boxes, then cable will be a bargain in comparison.

  • Jason

Still trying to decide if I want to supplement my Roku box with one of these.

  • kirk

    I want you Apple TV!!!

  • Jev

I’ve read that the previous gen of ROKU devices had problems with skipping and frequent rebuffering with Netflix streaming. Have these issues been fixed in the new models?
    Nice review. Thanks.

  • Count me in too. Big fan!

  • Christian

Great review. Crossing my fingers that I win!

  • Lisa

Looks like the Boxee is the better deal but I won’t sneeze at a free AppleTV. =:o)

  • Mark East

I still think Apple TV is more about Apple trying to capture the elusive “third screen” rather than actually creating a product that fills a need and does it elegantly like the iOS and MacOS platforms. Love to check one out first hand, though…

  • Paul Wilson

Yes please! Airplay looks like the clincher for me.

  • Porsche Guy

I’m still on the fence on the Apple TV but if Hulu or Hulu+ was supported that would sway my decision.

  • Porsche Guy

I’m still on the fence on the Apple TV but if Hulu or Hulu+ was supported that would sway my decision.

  • Jay S

Would like to win that Atv 🙂

  • dave

sweet, more free product – count me in on this entry too!

  • James F

I think the apple tv is convenient if you live inside the apple bubble and are use to the apple UI
It’s a decent alternative to my 10 yr old pc 🙂

  • I’ll chime in, I want that! 🙂

  • Dom

    Really curious about this

  • Ivan Yung

I still think Apple TV fails for the 2nd time. Can’t blame Apple for trying to keep people in its ecosystem, but there’s so much content available on Earth that it’s a bad idea to go with just 1 proprietary format offered by 1 single company

  • Bronson

Nice review, put my name in the hat!

  • Raul Deju

Ok I can’t wait to win this Apple TV box plug it in. Although I’d rather win the Roku after reading Dan’s review. I will use it more for listening to my music and pandora, and viewing my own home movies and photos. Maybe for this ATV is better

  • K-Man

Thanks for your thoughts, and free ATV2 offer. 🙂

  • Robert John HEBERT

i tried the iTV at the Apple store in Tucson last week and liked the high quality of the video streaming from my favorite podcasts. I was surprised at the great quality. I will probably get one of each: iTV, Roku, and Google/Logitech, each for its own strengths, and because I have 3 Dish DVRs in different rooms.

  • davige

For the time being, I’ll stick with my hacked 1st gen. Apple TV.

  • Dennis

Great reporting!! I’d like to read a review of GoogleTV and Roku now that the Google product is available. Christmas is coming soon and I’d like to know which is the best value.

  • I was just about to buy the apple tv when i googled your article. now i’m on the fence. like you i’m an avid mac and apple consumer, but the features of the roku sound pretty damn cool. i like things simple and your description of the roku sounds like the ticket. i have to agree with you regarding how all mac devices (not matter how well they work and how well they’re designed) all seem to be just a vehicle to rent or buy more products to work in tandem with the last (pretty smart business plan, i know)! i’m going to make a stand and leave the comfort of mac and go ROKU! Thanks for a great article!

  • one comment

  • Stephen346

I would like to win this, it would make my 6 year old son very oooo so very happy

  • Schmidty

    Thanks for the entry!

  • Ms Evette

I stumbled upon your blog when I searched for streaming media. I am currently attending college and am doing research for a presentation that is due near the end of this semester. I have bookmarked your site and will be reading your blog on a regular basis. If I use any of your articles, I will be sure to cite your work. But how cool would it be to have a device that would go along with my presentation?

  • Loved the review, Dan. I’ve been waiting for someone to do it, and yours is the first I’ve found! Congrats on being first and best, as usual!

  • Andrew

This market is rapidly changing, and I feel it’s going to be a huge technological staple in our future. I love Apple’s design, but to be successful in the future, Content must be King. Go Roku!!

  • Brian

    Bring it on!

  • C. Lane, Jr.

I have a Mac Pro and just ordered an iPod – so this would work well for me, despite it’s rank as #2 in your review.

  • Greg

    Thanks for the review!

  • Bryan

Good review — it will be interesting to see how Apple competes with the current AppleTV specs and content deals. I’d have to say that the Apple TV is a good choice for those with substantial investment in the iTunes ecosystem. The out-of-box integration with existing media collections is a powerful feature for a fairly low-cost device. Talking about the poor remote without mentioning the “Remote” app is an big omission.

  • Grant

    AppleTV, woop!

  • In case I don’t win the Roku 🙂

  • Matt

    Thanks for entering me.

  • I agree with you wholeheartedly.

  • Doug Chapin

    I always love Apple stuff.

  • RB

Curious that Apple has not embraced 1080p as Sony PlayStation Network and Xbox Live have.

  • Keith

    Enjoyed the comparison!

  • Thanks for letting us enter he contest! The Handyguys’ videos look better on Apple TV when the user syncs the High Definition feed from iTunes. Its encoded to a higher bitrate than the same content in the blubrry application for the Roku.

  • Cheekius Geekus

    Pick me! Pick me!

  • Jason Hollingsworth

    Thanks for the review Dan!

  • Scott Capito

Nice review … enjoyed your unbiased opionion as always.

  • Would love to stream from my iMac… Randomly pick me!

  • Excellent comparison of the Apple TV and the Roku XDS. Still, an Apple TV would beat what I have now (ie, nothing). Thanks, Dan!

  • David

If I won this I would definitely look forward to jailbreaking it. That could be very interesting.

  • Tom Anschutz

OK, so I’m cheating, and posting the same comment twice. I’d enjoy either device. Again:
Thanks for the review. I have the 1st generation verions of both Apple TV and Roku. I was not initially impressed with the Roku’s firmware stability and interoperability with some TVs, but as you point out, the Roku/Netflix business model for consuming content can’t be beat, and they have been improving. While the Apple TV is a slick system, I’ve rented very few movies. I have to say that there were some significant upgrades to the Apple TV platform over time, and that you should not underestimate leveraging a computer in concert with the ATV in order to develop new and innovative applications. Obviously, TBD 😉 What did work really well for me on ATV was this: set it to shuffle your digital [i]photos and music library at the same time. My ATV has spent most of it’s up-time doing exactly this, and I have to admit that while it sounds like a lame application, it’s actually pretty addictive and a great background to have on the TV while you aren’t actively watching. When it *is* time to watch something, switch over to the Roku!

  • Travis Kendell

I’ve been using the old AppleTV for a while, I’m curious how the new one compares. Will I notice the fact that it lacks an internal HD?

  • David Morrison

Great review and writeup as always. Personally looking forward to dropping an appletv into my setup. Easier access to content, even paid, is always a good thing.

  • Anthony

    Fingers crossed

  • Murray

I always wanted to watch NCAA B-ball on an ipod, now my dream will come true

  • Mason

I’d be into trying this, for sure. My old Mac Mini does the job partially, but not as conveniently!

  • Roberto

I already own a Roku XD|S but I won’t refuse an Apple TV.

  • Content Developer

    Thanks for the post

  • Raj

Dan, thanks for the consistently great content!

  • Robin

Make a fanboy’s day!!! This will be reason enough to upgrade from our SD TV!

  • Sean kane

I’m more partial to the Apple TV since I already have an iTunes library.

  • Harvey

Free giveaway: Win a new Apple TV.
Great review. Now I can sound authoritative when someone asks me about Apple TV and Roku.

  • Win

entering to win the apple tv!

  • Matt

The new Apple TV box is fine, except for one thing — it’s slow to download on DSL. About 350 minutes to download a 43 minute tv show. That’s too long.

  • Jim Condon

Great review. Would love to win an AppleTV to play around with.

  • Chris

That was definitely a fair unbiased review. Apple really knows how to package and sell products but if consumers take the time to read reviews like this, they can get past the shiny Apple marketing machine and make a better informed purchasing decision.

  • Steve

    Great review.

  • stephen

Nice Article and good information for the multiple Devices. I like how you point out that other new devices like Google and Boxee will serve a different purpose/audience. Everyone is still competing for that TV Screen Though.

  • Bill

its an apple for a TV how can you go wrong

  • LB

Would be great to test out Apple TV too!

  • Kenneth Rogalski

Apple is gonna have a tough time competing against Amazon and Hulu content.

  • Nathan Rose

The new Apple TV looks great. Had the original for about 2 months, but this is exactly what I need!

  • I’d love an Apple TV. I just bought the Roku XDs for the bedroom. I’d put the Apple TV in my living room. 🙂

  • La Portuguesa

    Finally Apple TV with Netflix!

  • Carina

Would love to win an Apple TV. Thanks for a great review!

  • Lars-Erik Olson

Thanks Dan! Keep up the great work… I’ve learned a lot from you.

  • David C

I am not sure you can back-up while streaming with Apple TV. Reviewer mentioned that being a strength of the Roku box, but did not detail the experience with ATV. That will be a real draw-back if you must re-stream just to back-up 10 seconds, or even a few minutes. It is rare to not back-up during a program due to missed dialogue or an interruption. I bet that will be addressed in a future firmware update.

  • Sign me up for the contest. Do you have any info about the fate of the old Apple TVs? Will they get Netflix integration, etc?

  • GLC

    I’m in. Dan+AppleTV+Free = Pure Awesomeness.

  • Jess

I want an Apple Tv so Bad. Please send me one. Thanks!

  • Mat K

I just bought the basic roku and the XD|S. As a Netflix subscriber who used the wii and former owner of the 160GB Apple TV I have to say the Roku is a dream come true!!!! No hack needed and it works. FINALLY a streaming tv box worth ditching ATT U-Verse TV 🙂

  • James Watkins

I’ve been a regular reader of your blog. Keep On Keeping It On Dan!

  • Croc

LOOT! Yes, I’ll take an “Apple Pie”

  • Would be nice to have. Great job with the reviews!

  • Alex

Great review! I got the Roku XDS based solely on this review. Now I want to try the Apple TV if I win it. Thanks!

  • Ana

    Great review – thanks.
We haven’t had cable for years and have relied on Netflix DVDs. Now we have a Roku and love it. We are considering the Apple TV because we would like to do local streaming from our Apple computer. I’m not aware of an easy way to do that with the Roku. Anyone know if that’s in the works?

  • Ricky

I would like to win an Apple TV. I haven’t been able to afford Apple products much and I would like to win one. Please randomly pick me as the winner of the Apple TV.

  • Tim

Great comparison article. Can’t wait to see where the future is going with these products!

  • Sri

Thanks for the awesome review and giveaway!

  • Teresa

Nice review. I also like Apple products, but not necessarily to the point that I am biased against other products, so it’s nice to see a reasonably fair comparison.

  • robert

The channels and content for both devices needs to grow. Thr free channels need to match the pay, and the prices need to adjust, but I would like to have one.

  • Lundon

I am super excited to try this out it’s so small and nice looking. I really want to win thanks for reading my email.

  • diego

…what about six bottles of good italian wine? ; )

  • reid nystrom

I have been looking to get Apple TV. I just graduated and had to move home to my parents after a 5 year college education and have been looking at buying an Apple TV unit to reduce my boredom. Thank you.

  • Thanks for the in-depth review!!

  • I would really like to test drive Apple TV in my classroom teaching incubator and let the students assess the product.

  • bruno

You are awesome about giving stuff away.
    Thank you again.

  • Pdaddy

I am looking for apple or roku to step it up and support hi def audio streaming as well.

  • Wes Fisher

Would’ve been nice if you mentioned customer service in your comparisons. Netflix, the original developers of Roku, sold off the rights & the new customer service is outsourced to India & a nightmare to deal with. It was actually a Netflix rep who turned me on to the Apple TV box. Perhaps a follow-up regarding customer service will come in the future. In the meantime, hoping I’ll get a shot to compare the 2 myself.

  • Cosmo

I’ll stick w/ my Apple TV 160gb running Tiger, cool giveaway though.
If I could put os x on it i might buy it, but it has less support for resolution outputs then the 2006 Apple TV!
Also, vram wise it has less as well!

  • david

i want one for real its cool

  • KB Sonar

Wow no comparison with an Apple TV.

  • Sandra Hurt

Have heard great things about Apple would be an awesome present to the hubby.

  • Rick D

Had Roku since the gate, sorry I did not follow my instincts. And buy stock at $22.
Would love to try the apple box, as all my other gadgets ang laptops are Mac

  • Wileypo46

Still not convinced which to buy. Too many similarities between the units.

  • Sounds great, looking forward to the drawing!

  • Bill Roper

Great article very informative and objective

  • Ileana Stan

I don’t have that luck ..but the one that would end up winning this one it’s a very lucky one.

  • TruthBeTold

The wow factor associated with any Apple product always sways many people’s decisions in favor of Apple, including mine. I have owned the current gen Apple TV for a while now and I would love for it to have apps and Internet browser.
